MoMA Comes to Melbourne | Melbourne, Australia

Did you know that MoMa (Modern Museum of Art) is currently showcasing artwork in Melbourne?

I did not until a recent trip to this (pretty awesome) Australian city. As my friend and I planned our week in Melbourne, we saw that MoMA were currently exhibiting some of the artwork in the National Gallery Victoria that usually sits in the galleries in New York. Having no current plans to visit New York (although one day, yes please, take me!), it was a great opportunity to get a taster for MoMa.

“The National Gallery of Victoria, in partnership with The Museum of Modern Art, New York, presents MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art as the 2018 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition. MoMA at NGVprovides a unique survey of the Museum’s iconic collection. Consisting of over 200 key works, arranged chronologically into eight thematic sections, the exhibition traces the development of art and design from late-nineteenth-century urban and industrial transformation, through to the digital and global present.” – NGV website

While I’m not a super art connoisseur, I did take art at school all the way through and really enjoyed it. There was a few paintings in the MoMA exhibition that we had studied or at least briefly looked at in school, and that’s always my favourite thing about these sorts of adventures: seeing art, sculptures and artefacts that I’ve only ever seen in books or online.

I really enjoyed seeing the Pablo Picasso, the Salvador Dali, the Fernand Leger, the Roy Lichttenstin, and the Andy Warhol, and while it was cool to see some of the other great artists that I recognised – Georgia O’Keefe, Frida Kahlo, Piet Mondrian – I’ve never been a great fan of their works. Which is totally fine (don’t get me started on the philosophy of aesthetics – that paper at University was the bane of my existence), and I don’t have to like paintings and painters who are famous. All good.

At the very end of the exhibition you enter a room with what looks like black dashes everywhere. Turns out there are staff in there who take a note of your height and write your name on the wall, hence why all the marks are around the middle of the wall. Super neat interactive art!

It only took about an hour or so to venture around, and cost AUD $28 for an adult ticket, with concession discounts. This MoMA exhibition in Melbourne runs until October 7th, so if you live in Melbourne or are heading there in the next few months, then I highly recommend checking it out.
