Dear Ron,

Firstly, can I just say well done for making it through an entire series of disasters without dying. Top marks. Secondly, thank you for being the kind of friend that a) we all want to have and b) we all (hopefully) strive to be.

From the very first moments we meet you, small, red-headed and awaiting your turn to run into a brick wall, we have loved you. Your adorable catch phrases like ‘bloody hell’ and ‘wicked’ quickly became a part of our vocab, and even if your creator, J.K. Rowling, wasn’t 100% about you and Hermione getting together at the end, we always were. Always.

Right back in the beginning when you help fight the troll in girls’ bathroom, to when you literally walked into a nest of your own nightmares (hello giant spiders), to right at the end when you stood by Harry and the school as it all seemed to be falling into the slimy hands of Voldemort, you were a brave and loyal friend.

Your sense of humour always gave a dark situation a glimmer of light, and your love for doing the right thing always shone through. Even though you were surrounded by older siblings who both angered and annoyed you at times, you looked up to them in a way we can only strive to. Your protective nature towards Ginny was just like any older brother should be, but your acceptance and support of her relationship with your best friend was beautiful.

The sacrifices you made for your friends out number the others. You didn’t need to try and curse Malfoy and thereby be spewing slugs for the rest of the day. You didn’t need to be the Knight. You didn’t need to stand between Harry and Sirius with a broken leg. You disguise yourself as a Harry to make yourself a decoy. You dove into an icy lake to save Harry. You begged Bellatrix to torture you instead of Hermione. You didn’t need to do any of these things, but you did.

From you we have learnt that you don’t need to be star, you don’t need to be the one in the lime light to succeed in life. We learnt about family loyalty, and friendship. From you we learnt that you can overcome prejudice. We learnt that it doesn’t matter where you come from, it matters who you are and where you’re going. We learnt that it’s okay to be scared and have fears, but it’s even better when you can bravely face them, even if you couldn’t feel farther away from bravery if you tried. From you, Ron, we learnt that you can always come back, no matter how long you’ve been away.

Yes, you were flawed. Yes you had your slip ups, yes you were jealous, and petty, and rude at times, just a little bit silly, and shouldn’t have done a few things that you did, but you never strayed far from your friends’ sides, and for that we raise a goblet to you.

And so we thank you, Ron, on this your birthday (1st March), that you were the best friend Harry needed throughout his journey, but more than that; you were courageously yourself, even through the tough times. We commend you for that, and we strive to be even a little like you in our lives.

Weasley is our King!

Forever,
Your fans.
