Today is Molly Weasley’s birthday. No, not the actress, Julie Walters, but the character. I know this because my friend declared this to me one day, after discovering that they both shared a birthday. In celebration of Mrs. Weasley’s birthday, I thought I’d share with you my favourite women in the Harry Potter series. They’re in no particular order, but they are all great characters.

Best Mother Award: Molly Weasley

Starting with the birthday girl, how kick-ass is Molly Weasley? You never really and truly know it until she annihilates Bellatrix Lestrange in the last book, but you 100% knew she was capable of being so incredibly awesome. She’s the best mother because she’s bossy but brilliant, crazy but courageous, a tad loopy but loving to everyone.

Brightest Witch her age Award: Hermione Granger

Of course. Who else? I love Hermione and how she is beautiful and smart and powerful and girly and kicks butt all at the same time. She’s definitely a heroine to look up to, even now; I know I did growing up, too.

Never Giving Up Award: Nymphadora Tonks

Even though Lupin tried to push her away, believing himself not good enough or safe enough for her, she persisted. She knew what she wanted and she went for it. Also, she can turn her nose into a pig’s.

Delightful Kind of Different Award: Luna Lovegood

Oh Luna. You are spectacular. What I love about Luna is that she’s loopy, but she’s okay with that. She hangs radishes on her ears and gets her shoes stolen. She reads the paper upside down, wears colour glasses and says seemingly silly things. She can get away with wearing whatever she likes because her personality allows it. She is true to herself, she never changes to fit in, and she sticks by her friends (even when they’re in a different house) until the end. She is strong even in her weird quietness, and she’s a delightful kind of different.

Coolest Animagus Award: Minerva McGonagall

The mother of Hogwarts, McGonagall is brilliantly minded, a super awesome witch, and a caring and kind woman at the same time. While she is stern and will deduct house points, it’s only ever for the students’ own good. She protects the students and the school as long as she has breath, and everyone needs someone like that in their lives.  Also, she’s an animagus, and every time I see a cat, I think “Professor McGonagall? Is that you?”

Best Little Sister Award: Ginny Weasley

Even though she went through an annoying ‘just pick one person to date, Ginny!’ phase, I did always want her to end up with Harry. While she only plays more of a roll in the later books, she is pretty awesome, and makes a great Quidditch player in her later Hogwarts years. I love the fact that she has all those brothers, but still manages to somehow be a big presence in their home, and a great little sister.

Most Redeemable Lady Award: Narcissa Malfoy

Okay, so it’s a little weird that I’ve included her right? Right. Except I always had a bit of soft spot for Mrs Malfoy. It can’t be easy having Lucius as a husband and Draco as a son. At the very end, she turns out to be okay, and she does the right thing. Sure, it was because she loves her son, and she wants to protect him and not Harry, but she betrays Voldemort just by saying ‘he’s dead’ … and I like to think she regains any credibility she lost over the series.

So happy birthday, Mrs Weasley, *raises a glass* here’s to you, and the wonderful women-folk of the Harry Potter universe.
