So you’re a lifestyle blogger? Fantastic! That means you write about all sorts of things that people love to see, use, experience, buy, eat, and craft in their lives (and more!). But here’s the thing: being a lifestyle blogger can be hard yakker sometimes, and even if you’ve been at it for a while, there are some really important building blocks for lifestyle bloggers that you need to have in place so that everything you do becomes that little bit easier.

In this post, we’re going to take a look at 8 building blocks for lifestyle bloggers in the hopes that you can create and build a successful lifestyle blog from the ground up, or restructure and mend the already epic blog you have (so you can keep creating content that your audience loves!).

Personal drive

There’s no point starting a blog if you don’t have some personal drive. You need that oomph, that something-something that makes you excited about the possibilities. As a lifestyle blogger, you need to have some drive to do what you do.

Hopefully, you’ve already figured out your why, the reason behind starting a blog and upkeeping it. Perhaps it’s to make some extra money. Perhaps it’s because you want to share your story and the things that help you in your day-to-day so that you can help others in a similar situation.

Whatever it is, that needs to be front and centre. Your why and your drive to be a blogger is going to make a bucket-load of difference to your blog.

Passion

Likewise, having a passion for what you’re doing is going to help you create content that is engaging for your audience, that excites them as much as it excites you. Your passion for your projects, what you’re doing, your life is going to seep through into your writing and into your content.

Community

Blogging seems like a lonely activity. But it should not be one that you actually do alone.

While you might be sitting down to write your blog posts in your office or bedroom, and all there is is you and your laptop … having a community of bloggers around you (not physically – you don’t want that many people in your house! That’s the introvert in me speaking), can make such a big difference.

Whether you build a community of like-minded bloggers or you have a community of readers and audience members who are excited about what you’re writing, having Community in your set of building blocks is key to keeping up that momentum and passion to keep going.

Content ideas

You can’t have a lifestyle blog (or any type of blog at that!) if you don’t publish blog posts. And to publish blog posts you need to write them. And to write them, you need to have the content ideas to do so.

Having great content ideas is one of the building blocks of having a brilliant blog. Which makes sense right? Right. People don’t want to read posts that lack originality, that is the same every week or are the same as every other lifestyle blogger out there.

Take your content ideas and see how you can put your own spin on them. Use that passion and drive we’ve already talked about and weave that into your posts.

Writing skills

Nobody was born a writer. Not Stephen King. Not Margaret Atwood. Not JRR Tolkien. They were born just like you and me: without a pen in their hand.

But what they did have? The ability to start, learn and grow in their skills. I don’t know what their first stories were like, but I’d hazard a guess they were no Lord of the Rings or The Shining.

You don’t have to be an award-winning writer to write a blog. But it’s important to know the basics of writing, how to write like you and not like Margaret Atwood (unless that’s what you’re going for, of course), and to grow in the writing skills that you already do have.

💡 Tip: Use tools like Grammarly to help you when it comes to spelling and grammar.

Photography skills

As a lifestyle blogger, chances are you’ll be posting a lot about your life, the products you use, the places you do, the activities you part take in and … anything and everything!

It’s such a great space to be in because people will follow you for your recommendations about lots of different things and not just travel, or just eco-living tips, or how to raise kids. It’s a little bit of everything!

But another big part (right up there with writing) is the photography. It’s the images that you’re using on your blog to showcase what you’re writing about. Having some photography skills, or upskilling if you have the basics down, is really going to help draw in the audience you want.

People are visual, especially these days. Think of how many platforms are solely image-based, or at least like … 80%. “An image says a thousand words” isn’t a saying for no reason.

Stickability

It might be a more abstract building block for you, lifestyle blogger, but a super important one to have in your pile.

Stickability/ˌstɪkəˈbɪlɪti/ noun INFORMAL

a person’s ability to persevere with something; staying power.

You could give up. You could. There’s literally no one stopping you. This blogging thing is hard. It takes time. It takes energy. And you could quit at any time.

But if you have some stickability in your building block then good things will come. It does time to write blog posts, post on social media, publish Pins on Pinterest, and think up another set of content ideas. But it also takes time in that you can’t expect to see the results you want to see immediately. Give it time. Stick with it.

Along with stickability comes determination. In order to see it out, to keep going, and to use all the other building blocks needed for a lifestyle blogger, you need to have some determination.

Determination and the personal drive we spoke about above will help you open up that new draft, brainstorm those amazing content ideas, do your keywords research, publish that post. But it will also help you when your posts don’t do as well as perhaps you think they should have. When your blog seems too hard to keep up.

Don’t let go of your determination.
