I don’t really watch a lot of TV, but I do watch a lot of TV shows. Confused? Don’t be. I have DVDs. One of my favourite genres of TV show is sitcoms, or Situation Comedies, if you want to be fancy. Apparently there have been some changes to the title ‘Sitcom’ but who cares, we’re going to ignore any that there may be. From here on in, what I mean by Sitcom (although this is probably the last time I will use this word), I mean a short, normally 20 minute show that is funny. Cool? Cool. Anyway, there’s always one or two characters who are my favourites, or who I really want to be friends with. So I made a list, surprise surprise. Do remember, while reading this, I’m talking about the character who I want to be friends with, not the actor. Although I’m sure the actors are lovely people too…
9 People I Would Like to be Friends with from TV Sitcoms
1. Joey, from Friends

I think that this is a given. Everyone has a favourite character from Friends, and it was such a good show! Am I right?! Right! But I just love how ridiculous Joey is and how crazy he is. And how simple minded he is, and how he doesn’t get jokes, or really simple every day knowledge. His logic is also impeccable We’d get a long great. We’re so alike.
2. Jess, from New Girl

Other than the fact she’s a school teacher (I’m not really a kid-person), everything about her is hilarious Everything she does is hilarious, and I think being friends with her would be both entertaining and rewarding. She clearly knows where to buy all the cute dresses, and how to make yummy food, and how to deal with 3 male house mates! I couldn’t do that. She seems like the kinda friend that everyone needs – the crazy one who secretly has it all together. Oh, and she can’t wear high heels very well…and neither can I.
3. Marshall, from How I Met Your Mother

Perhaps to the most obvious choice from HIMYM, but I think the best choice. I’ll explain but eliminating the others. Ted: needs to get his life together; it would be stressful being around him; seriously, just tell the kids how they met their mother already. Barney: no explanation needed really. Robin: (not spelt with a ‘y’ apparently) she gets up at crazy times to do the news, and I wouldn’t want to become nocturnal to hang out with her. Lily: I love Lily, but she’s an artist, and I try to be and we would probably fight about paint and canvases and things. But Marshall! He has crazy as ideas (like me), he wants to look after nature (I like trees), he’s a layer (I too, have a brief case), and he is a very loyal friend to Ted, and that’s awesome. Oh, and he loves Star Wars as much as I do.
4. Raj, from The Big Bang Theory

Again, probably not the obvious choice from this show. But I think having Raj as a friend would be awesome, because, unless he was drunk (and then wouldn’t care anyway) he couldn’t talk to me, but I could talk to him. Or talk at him. And it would be like he was a good listener, when really he just wouldn’t be able to talk back. Perfect. And he is actually pretty girly. Picture above as proof.
5. Manny, from Modern Family

I think everyone needs a friend is a lot younger than you are. To keep you sane. I also think though, that having young friends might lead to your mental levels going down considerably. But! If I had Manny as a friend, then I’d have a friend who was younger than me, but smarter and considerably more clever than me. Seriously, guys, that kid knows everything!
6. Elliot, from Scrubs

Again with another crazy female on TV. You know how when you were a kid (or just last time you were watching something with someone else), and you pointed to people on TV, or in books, and said ‘That’s you’ and ‘She is totally you!’ and ‘You’re him’ etc. Elliot isn’t really me. Tricked ya. But she would be fun to be friends with. It would make me feel like I have my life together. And it would also just be a lot of hilarious times.
7. The Punkah Wallah, from It Ain’t Half Hot Mum

So you may not have seen this; I haven’t seen all of it like I have with some series. But it’s awesome. It was out in like the 70s and it’s about “The comic adventures of a group of misfits who form an extremely bad concert party touring the hot and steamy jungles of Burma entertaining the troops during World War II” (thank you, IMDB). Anyway, its hilarious. And there’s a punkahwallah (one word? Two? Google has it both ways), which is basically the man who operates the fan and ensures everyone keeps cool in the heat. I want him to be my friend because sometimes it really does get too hot, and you can’t be bothered fanning your face with a nearby book…it would be much better if you had a nearby punkahwallah.
8. Berg, from Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place

I think the name of this show changed to ‘Two Guys and a Girl’ after a while, because I keep seeing it called both. Ah well. Now, this show was out in the late 90s, and I actually never saw it on TV. But last year I discovered it and I love it! I haven’t even finished the first season yet, and there are 4, but it’s great so far! Ryan Reynolds is in it (*swoon*), and his character is Berg, who is a laid-back pre-med student, is me in male form, I’m sure of it. Other than the pre-med studies (I bet I couldn’t even get into pre-pre-pre-med), and, the chasing girls part we are the same person. He’s really laid-back, without a care in the world, lives with his best friend (which I did for a year), and is super annoying. We’d get a long great.
9. Penny, from Happy Endings

Oh, Penny. Sometimes your craziness makes me want to be a better person. I actually think I’m more like Max in Happy Endings, personality wise, but I would want Penny as a friend. Even when she has depressing days, she seems to have fun. She is crazy on the outside, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she was plotting to take over the world on the inside. Don’t say I didn’t warn you, Earth. Don’t say I didn’t try!
What characters (if any…) would you love to be friends with? I’m sure it’s not just me! I can’t be…Surely…
They don’t even have to be from TV sitcoms. From movies, from dramas, from medical shows…and all the rest.
Do tell me! Go.
