Sauvie Island Pumpkin Patch

There’s something about the Sauvie Island Pumpkin Patch.

We don’t have pumpkin patches in New Zealand, so when an opportunity to visit the Sauvie Island Pumpkin Patch in Oregon came up, I jumped at the chance.

In New Zealand, we eat pumpkin like the vegetable it is and not as a sweet-pie filling only (although that happens sometimes too). We don’t decorate our homes for the autumn, with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes adorning our doorsteps or filling large vases on the mantelpiece. A pumpkin is a pumpkin. Made for eating.

But boy do I love the idea of a pumpkin-theme home.

“I will defend pumpkin until the day I die. It’s delicious. It’s healthy. I don’t understand the backlash. How did pumpkin become this embarrassing thing to love but bacon is still the cool flavor to add to everything? I don’t have anything against bacon; just don’t come after pumpkin like it’s a crime to love an American staple.” – Anna Kendrick

Who hurt Anna’s love of pumpkin!? I’m 100% with her on this one, although she probably means it to be in a sweet pie of deliciousness, rather than thrown in with the potatoes for the Sunday roast. Either way, she’s right.

As well as eating pumpkins, I do love the decorations that Americans place around their home in autumn. In my recent trip to Oregon in October, it was impossible to go a day without seeing a pumpkin. One of the things I knew I had to do while I was there was going to a pumpkin patch (as we circle back round to the main idea behind this post).

Visiting the Sauvie Island Pumpkin Patch may seem like a non-event, especially if you live in America and your state is full of pumpkin patches in the fall. But when you’re from New Zealand and you haven’t experienced a pumpkin patch like this before … it was a magical time!

After a little Googling, my friend and I headed over to Sauvie Island, just to the northwest of Portland city. The drive around the island was stunning in itself, but the visit to 2 pumpkins patches was brilliant. Needless to say, happy place.

We even ordered pumpkin spice lattes because when at the Sauvie Island Pumpkin Patch, it has to be done. We wandered through the little gift store, and said hello to a goat at the petting zoo, as well.

I can now successfully tick ‘visit a pumpkin patch’ off my bucket list. What a great time to be alive.
