Subscription Box :: Nerd Block April 2015

One of the boxes that I saw in my subscription-box-finding expedition last month was the Nerd Block box. This box is geared at…nerds. Heck.Yes. So I’m a bit of nerd, especially when it comes to fandoms and scrolling non-stop through Tumblr laughing at Supernatural gifs (seriously, though, there’s one for everything…right?!).

When I discovered the Nerd Block box (and watched several unboxing videos from previous months on YouTube), I realised that in the box you could get anything from the TV shows I love (Doctor Who, Supernatural etc) to movies (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Star Wars etc) and other cool nerdy, geeky things, like Marvel and DC bits and bobs.

Also Pop Figures seemed to feature quite regularly, and I think they are so super neat.

So I signed up! Just for one month to see what it was like. There are actually 6 different boxes that you can get: Horror Block, Comic Block, Arcade Block, Nerd Block Classic, Nerd Block Jr Girls, and Nerd Block Jr Boys. The Horror, Comic, Arcade and Classic boxes come with a tshirt too. I went with the Nerd Block Classic, figuring that that was more of a generic-geeky box. I discovered later that I could have googled a spoiler to see what the theme of the box was before subscribing, and I think perhaps I wouldn’t have chosen this box to be my first one, but what the hey?

In the box you get a variety of items that are themed to that month, including a tshirt, and April’s theme was ‘Growing up 80s’. Now, I grew up in the 90s (and heck yes, if they ever do that box I am all in!), but I have always loved 80s movies, 80s music, so even after I found out the themed and second guessed subscribing, I wasn’t too bummed. Here’s what was in the April 2015 Nerd Block:

Pac-Man heat change mug! So neat! While I didn’t play pac-man in the 80s (hellloooo not even born yet), everyone’s played Pac-man and loved it. And you never have enough mugs, can you? No. No you can’t. Love that it changes when there’s hot liquid in it. I haven’t tried it out yet, but I will defeinitly use that.

The t-shirt this month was Back to the Future themed! Another series of movies that I love and have seen multiple times. The cool thing about Nerd Block is that when you subscribe, they ask you for your t-shirt size, so the shirt you get actually fits you! The card there is a little explanation card that each box comes with, explaining why things were added etc to the box. The other item was Though Sh*t, by Kevin Smith. Now…this item. Don’t really care for it…at all. It’ll probably go on TradeMe (like NZ’s eBay), but looking at some of the other more recent Nerd Block boxes, they seem to be adding books to their boxes more. The other thing that was in the box that I completely forgot to take a photo of, were nerdy play card things. I don’t know. Not my thing either, so I’ll probably off load them to someone else or put them into a ‘I don’t know what to do with this’ box.

Pricing of Nerd Block

The Comic, Girls and Boys boxes are $13.99USD and the others are $19.99USD, plus shipping. Shipping within America is $9.50USD, to Canada it’s $8.75USD, and to the rest of the world it’s $12.50USD. Because I live in NZ, the total cost of the box was about $33USD, which is a pretty good price, considering the individual worth of all the items. The combined cost of the items is around $50USD, so that’s pretty sweet.

I got the ‘your box has been sent’ email on the 17th of April, and it arrived on the 22nd, so that was super fast! I’m really impressed with that speed. Thank you, Canada post!

Verdict?

The pricing and shipping are pretty good, and I’m pleased with that. The items were very 80s, which was definitely to the month’s theme, and I really like the mug and the Vinyl Ghost Busters car. I might go for a slightly different size tshirt next time, but I do love that a tshirt is one of the things included. The book was just a bit meh, but the other things made up for that. So will I get it again? Yeah, sure! I will be checking the spoilers online, though, for the theme of the month. I believe May’s theme is Ani-May, which I won’t be signing up for, but will keep my eyes peeled (such a weird and gross saying) for what June’s might be.
