What Is Wrock? Wizard Rock - Harry Potter Week

What on earth is Wizard Rock, you will probably be wondering.

I implore you, dear friends, to cast your minds back. The year is 1994. Harry and Hermione are looking great in their dress robes and balls gowns, and Ron is looking like his Great Aunt Tessie (and smelling like her too). They step into the Great Hall with the other students from Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang for the party of the year – the Yule Ball.

Cue awkwardness. Cue teachers making fools of themselves. Cue Padma and Parvati being annoyed at their dates. Cue The Weird Sisters. Cue Wizard Rock. Sometimes shortened to Wrock.

Since the release of Harry Potter (both the books and then the movies), there has been a wave of bands and groups singing songs about everything in the Magical word. According to my sources (*cough* Wikipedia *cough*), Wrock came into being between 2002-2004, beginning with the group Harry and the Potters. From there, groups and bands popped up all over the place, and even though the last book has come and gone, the last movie has been watched, Wrock continues. There’s even a music festival called Wrockstock.

While you can find a full list of Wizard Rock bands here on the Harry Potter Wiki page, today I thought I’d share a few songs from just a couple of the numerous Wrock bands out there. I love this idea so much. Some of the songs are borderline crazy, some lyrics are a little off and a little odd, but some are just great, and super catchy. A couple are originals, and a couple are using songs you’ll already know.

Enjoy (or don’t – no pressure)! Some are definitely better than others.
