I got sat on by a performer at Kooza.

True story. For some reason we managed to get seats four rows back from the front at Cirque Du Soleil Kooza, which is a little too close for comfort for me, for exactly this reason. One of the ‘clowns’ of the show (not an actual clown or I would have cried) went through the audience a few times as a tourist trying to find his seat, as part of the pre-show antics. When we got to where he thought was his seat, it was mine. So he sat on me. And then I stole his hat and popped it onto the little girl’s head who was sitting next to me. Hopefully she got a kick out of being part of the show, even if I didn’t.

What does ‘KOOZA’ mean? The name KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza”, which means “box”, “chest” or “treasure”, and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box”. – Cirque Du Soleil Kooza website FAQ page

But all awkward encounters aside, Kooza was another fantastic Cirque Du Soleil performance. If you’ve been around here for a while then you may recall my post about our adventure to see Totem a few years back, and then Quidam in 2016. Both were absolutely incredible, so I had high expectations for Kooza … which were 100% met and then some.

Kooza was way more nail-biting than the other ones were I think, and seemed to involve a lot more additional contraptions that needed to put in place during the show. Perhaps it was the height of many of the acts in Kooza that set our hearts racing – the two performers on bikes with a bar between them that then had a man on it standing on a chair all up on a tightrope, for instance. Or the two nutters who ran inside and outside of two spinning hamster wheels as they skipped and flipped up in the air with no harnesses. When one of them tripped on his skipping rope I just thought “this is going to be messy and I’m going to be able to say ‘I was there at Kooza when a man fell to his death!'”. Needless to say, he was fine.

The colours, the lights, the music, the story line; it was all so spectacularly done, like only Cirque Du Soleil can do, and if you have time to go, do it. There’s still time to get tickets the Auckland shows if this sounds like your kind of jam! Check out website for all the details!

Have you seen Kooza? What did you think? What was your favourite act?
