Sorry for the bad pictures, but it’s hard getting photos on your phone in the dark.

The past 2 weeks have been school holidays here in New Zealand, and as part of the break, the Auckland Museum put on an event called Night at the Museum: Time Warped. It was on the last Friday and Saturday night of the holidays, and while it was designed for kids, there was no way that we weren’t going. Ah, running around the museum at night time? Yes please!

So we bought our tickets and headed along to the museum with all the school kids, and it was awesome.

As you walked through the door, they scanned your ticket, and gave you a ‘passport’. In the passport there was a map of the museum, and scattered around the building were different areas labelled where you could find a person who would give you a clue. With the clue, you then had to decide what letter of the alphabet went with the clue, and you’d write it in the box with the person. Once you had walked around and collected 8 letters, you unscrambled them to make the word. And once you had that, you could make your way out again and grab a sweet from the lady at the door if you had the answer correct.

Sounds easy, right? Right. And it was, because it was designed for children. But just because we didn’t have any children to take along with us, doesn’t mean we didn’t enjoy it. It was fun listening to the actors talk about either the things in the museum, or take a lesson like Professor Sage in the old classroom, or listen to Dr. When the time traveler. We did get the word/s as soon as we had about 3 letters, (psst it was ‘worm hole’), but we still wandered around and listened to the other performers. Oh, and there was a dinosaur.

It was a lot of fun, and all I could think of was the Golden Tablet of Pharaoh Akhmenrah and how everything was going to come to life after sunset. I was ready for it. Alas, the tablet, or the New Zealand equivalent didn’t appear to be there. It was fun all the same. If the Auckland museum does this sort of event again, and you have kids (or even if you don’t!) then I highly recommend going a long.

Perhaps you actually went along to this? Or something similar?
