I got to try the new Yumba and The Good Bite energy balls thanks to Revive Cafe.*

Most of my mail is either books or book-related, so when the courier arrived at my door with a box of goodies from Revive Cafe, I was well excited. And team, they did not disappoint.

“Revive Cafe’s new snack balls THE GOOD BITE and YUMBA are launching throughout New Zealand this month and are proudly wrapped in home-compostable packaging. Not only are these plant-based snack products wholesome and delicious, they are the perfect guilt-free treat!”

I’m sorry, energy balls full of goodness that are also packaged with sustainable and earth-friendly wrapping? I’m interested! According to Revive Cafe, the bags are mostly ‘derived from wood pulp and GM-free corn sources that will break down when disposed of in a composting environment containing heat, water, oxygen, soil and micro-organisms’. So if you’ve got a compost heap at home, then these are perfect for you!

The Good Bite

The Good Bite energy balls come in two different flavours: Hemp & Choc Peanut and Hemp and Raspberry. They’re quick to point out that hemp is not marijuana, for those concerned, but rather is a fast-growing plant with a heap of goodness in it. Both the peanut butter and the raspberry jam fillings are very strong flavours and are rather more-ish. The raspberry one is particularly sweet as it’s sweetened with apple juice.

Yumba

The Yumba energy balls also come in two different flavours: Chocolate & Hazelnut (with a dual filing of homemade chocolate and peanut butter), and PBJ (also with the expected dual filing of peanut butter and strawberry jam/jelly). Despite having two flavours in one (especially the PBJ one), you can actually taste the peanut butter and the jam separately, as they aren’t mixed together in one smoosh, but are on two halves of the inside. The jam is sweetened by apple juice, too. The peanut butter in the Chocolate & Hazelnut option is very smooth, while the outside has more texture from the hazelnuts.

Why the two flavours for the two different brands of energy balls are pretty much the same, I don’t know, but they’re a great snack all the same. I love how they both come in compostable packaging; ‘if it’s good for the planet, it’s good for you’, they say. I’ve already put them in our compost bin and had people pull them out and say “you can’t put plastic in the compost!”, and me having to explain to them that this may feel like plastic but it’s going to decompose with all that composty goodness out there.

So glad you asked! Both YUMBA and THE GOOD BITE energy balls can be found in supermarkets and retail outlets nationwide.
