My thoughts on Heartstopper Vol 3

Much like Heartstopper Vol 1 and Vol 2, Vol 3 was adorable. It continues the story of Nick and Charlie and their blossoming relationship, in amongst tensions at school and at home. In Vol 3, the schools are off on a joint field trip to Paris (they’re based in England, so it’s just a short trip across the Channel), and suddenly Charlie and Nick’s friends are interacting and becoming friends in their own way. As Nick and Charlie try to grapple with being a couple that only a handful of people know about, they learn more about each other and each other’s lives.

Once again Alice Oseman brings us a very sweet story, laced with teen friendships, family dramas, mental health, discovering who you are in yourself as well as in relation to others, and the complexities of being a teenager. There are some beautiful new friendships and relationships in Heartstopper Vol 3, and Oseman’s drawings tell the story just as sweetly as the words the characters say. What I’ve really been enjoying about this series is that as well as the graphic novel aspect of chapters telling the stories, it’s interspersed with text messages, photos that ‘the characters have taken’, and other additional snippets that just add to the book as a whole. It’s done really well.

If you’re after a super sweet story about two kids trying to discover who they are, then head to the library or the bookstore and pick up a copy of Vol 1, and while you’re there you can now pick up Vol 2 and Vol 3. Enjoy.
