Bonnie’s Corner :: DIY Kennel Edition…

If you follow along with my adventures on Instagram and/or Twitter, then you may remember a little while back now, we found a wooden box on the side of the road near where we live. I don’t know what it’s like in your country – if you’re not from NZ – but here, if there’s something on the road side, normally between the road and the footpath, that means that the owner of said ‘something’ doesn’t want it any more and it’s a free-for-all. If you want it, you grab it. You don’t even have to find out whose it was, you simply stop, pop it in your car and drive away. It’s basically like the Bermuda Triangle outside the apartment in How I Met Your Mother…but in the whole of New Zealand.

Anywhoooo….so we found this box, put it in our car, took it home. Dad then started turning it into a proper kennel. Here’s what we/he did.

1. Cut a doorway in it

2. Drilled some holes in it’s base, so the air could circulate a bit

3. Put a flat roof on it

4. Painted it with weather proof paint (my sister might still paint some sort of dog-friendly thing on it still).

5. Then bits of wood would attached at the top front and top back, the front bit being higher than the back bit of wood. This was done so that we the corrugated iron went on top, it would be sloping back, catching any rain and getting it off the roof.

And that’s it! Once we actually finally got some corrugated iron, then we could finally move her kennel from inside the garage, where she had been sleeping in it in, to outside on the tiles. We also put a chain in there, so she can be chained up if need be.

Boom. This entire project cost about $20 because the only material we needed to buy was the wood for the roof, and the braces, also for the roof. We know that it probably won’t last very long, on account of the fact that it rains a lot here and it will probably start rotting at the bottom (those feet aren’t the most solid things ever), but for now it’s pretty good!  It’s not the prettiest kennel ever, but it’s practical, and will do for now.
