What is Sidekick by Auralee Wallace about?

Sidekick is about Brianna ‘Bremy’ St James. And she is broke. She’s been cut off from her billionaire father and twin sister, Jenny, and trying to make ends meet in the ‘real world’. One day she happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, which turned out to be the right place, as she was thrown into the path of the latest villain in town: the Sultana and her band of merry clowns (seriously…clowns? I hate clowns).

While she just tries to do the right thing each time she encounters the Sultana, it’s when Bremy meets the city’s superhero and crime-fighter, Dark Ryder, that she realises her true calling in life: become Dark Ryder’s apprentice. There’s a small glitch: Ryder doesn’t want an apprentice. As Bremy tries to convince Ryder that she could actually be useful, she also has to come up with her apartment rent, avoid her creepy neighbour, and avoid being recognised as the billionaire’s daughter that she really is.

My thoughts on Sidekick

I loved Bremy as a character. She was a confident disaster who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind or get her hands dirty. She was bold and brilliant, yet ridiculous and reckless at the same time. She was just … cool. She was a cool character who didn’t really know she was cool.

I also really liked the other characters in the story like the creepy almost-vampire-like neighbour, Queenie, and the hardcore geek, Bart. And then there were characters you wanted to punch in the face, or at least turn your nose up at.

The storyline was fast-moving and had a very ‘what’s gonna happen next?’ type feel to it. It’s written in first person which makes it hilarious because Bremy, narrating the story, often gets distracted and has to pull herself together. Wallace does an amazing job at portraying her character through the little things like that, as well as her actions.

With bad guys and good guys, geeky guys and creepy guys, a hot reporter who wants to take Bremy to dinner, a sister who is keeping secrets, a landlord who just wants his money, and a whole lot of crazy funny times, Sidekick is an awesome read and I highly recommend grabbing a copy when it’s released on the 1st of June. Seriously. Do it. You won’t regret it.
