As an avid Classics fan, anything Ancient Greek related, I’m there. So when I discovered that there was a Greek Exhibition at Auckland Museum, I knew I had to go. The Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes exhibition is on at Tāmaki Paenga Hira, Auckland War Memorial Museum and it’s well worth the visit.

When I was in high school, I studied Classics and continued on when I went to University. One of my favourite topics was all about Alexander the Great, and I loved learning about the ancient Greek ways of life, culture and art. In Uni, we studied so many vases (some of which I was lucky enough to see on a trip to Athens), and the Greek myths have always entertained and intrigued me.

The Ancient Greek Exhibition Auckland Museum is a wonderful collection borrowed from the British Museum, London, and showcases over 170 artefacts. From statues to weapons, vases and pottery to elaborate jewellery, there’s a little bit of everything.

The three themes are Athletes, Warriors and Heroes, and the exhibition breaks up each topic as you wander through the halls. As well as the visual element and seeing the artefacts up close, there is an audio guide you can plug into which is available in 6 different audio guides (free!), that even have adult and kids options.

As I wandered around (albeit quite quickly due to my own time restrictions), I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d seen some of the artefacts before, in my own trip to the British Museum when I lived in the UK. Even if I had, it was still a wonderful trip back in time, and to be reminded about why I love this period in history.

I think, while the vases may have gotten a little tiring in Uni when we had to study them for so dang long, they are actually one of my favourite artefacts now. Perhaps it’s because they’re all such great shapes and designs, or because it’s fun trying to figure out which figurines on the vases are which from Greek mythology and stories … I don’t know. But it’s a joy to see them all the same!
