April Showers Book Tag

We’re nearly the end of March, so it seems like the perfect time to do the April Showers Book Tag. I love going a good book tag; I find it allows me to look at the books I perhaps wouldn’t usually, and also remember what I have on my shelf (that have probably been sitting there far too long!).

The idea of an April Showers Book Tag is so sweet! You’ll notice as we go through these questions that they’re a mix of rainy day questions and spring-like questions. Here in New Zealand, we’re heading into autumn, but the days are similar. They get more rainy as we head into winter, and the days are getting cooler, the need for a sweater grows every day (which I love!).

The April Showers Book Tag

The April Showers Book Tag was created by Beyond the Book Reviews and contains 10 questions for booklovers to answer. You can find all the questions for this book tag in a copy-and-paste format at the end of this post.

Wondering if I had any books with water on the front cover, I had a look at my shelves, and lo-and-behold I found quite a few. But for this question, I’m going to pick The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte because it definitely has water on the front, but it’s also set in a very water-soaked world.

A classic novel you’d like to curl up on the couch with

I’m not a big reader of the classics, so I’m going to have to change this slightly and go with The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. I feel like it’s a classic fantasy, even if it’s not really ‘a classic’. The Hobbit is one of my favourite books and I love re-reading it when I get the chance. That would be the perfect book to curl up on the couch with.

A scary book you would read during a rainstorm

Probably something like Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall. It’s a Young Adult horror that I read for the first time at Halloween time, but I think it would make for a great thunderstorm or rainstorm read. And it’s reasonably short, so you could probably read the entire thing in just a few hours, reading out the storm.

A good book recommendation for rainy days

For rainy days I love reading something that I’m familiar with. A book that I’ve enjoyed for so many years and it’s like coming home when you open the cover. And so with that in mind, I’m going to say Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, back where it all began.

There’s something cosy about it, something that makes you want to curl up under a blanket, the sound of the rain hitting the windows, and stepping into Hogwarts for the first time … again.

Two characters you’d like to spend a rainy day with

Hermione Granger because she’d want to just read all day. Right? I’m definitely a read-all-day kinda girl if it’s a rainy day. I tend to avoid all the things I was going to do, and just open a book. That’s where you’ll find me. And I think Hermione would be similar. Although her books would probably be study tomes rather than novels.

I read both The Inheritance Games and The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes in 2021, over the space of a weekend. Which was highly enjoyable and I loved the books, but it also meant that I had to wait an age for the third book. There are pros and cons to reading like this. I love the covers of these books, especially the blues of The Hawthrone Legacy!

A book that has a rainy setting at some point

This is a struggle, mostly because so many books have rainy scenes at some point. But to grab a book that has a drizzly/misty feel to it all the time would be Twilight and the town of Forks. And that’s going to have to do for this one.

A book you wouldn’t mind using as an umbrella

This question 😂 There are many books I would use as an umbrella, ones that I don’t mind if they’re completely destroyed by the rain. Some books that I really haven’t enjoyed over the past few years that would make for a good umbrella would be The Taker by Alam Katsu, Beast, A Tale of Love and Revenge by Lisa Jensen, Highfire by Eoin Colfer, and Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman. All these books I’ve given below 2 stars too, and I wouldn’t read again or probably suggest to too many people.

A character you’d like to share an umbrella with

Oh there are many. And most of them are probably of the book-boyfriend variety.

A novel with a dry beginning but an amazing ending

This Woven Kingdom by Teherah Mafi was very slow going at the beginning and then I found it picked up at the end. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it had an amazing ending, but it was definitely better in the last quarter than the rest of the book.
