Disney On Ice - Auckland Review

Be warned: my inner child is about to get very excited. Oh, and it’s a bit of a photo overload. Sorry.

Last Friday, a few friends and I headed to Vector Arena here in Auckland to see…wait for it…Disney on Ice! What what what! Exciting! We booked tickets months and months ago, so it’s been a slow, painful wait. All last week I was listening to Disney songs, in preparation. True.Story.

The beginning, in New Orleans

My friend and I headed into town, and met up with two others, and we headed in and found out seats. I don’t really know what I was expecting, other than Disney – and that was enough for me! – but it was so awesome! This year’s theme was Dare to Dream, so it focussed on the Disney Princesses who had dreams…I bet every Disney song that mentions ‘dream’ just popped into your head, right?

The whole evening was narrated, if you like, by Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy, and between each story they came out and had a chat about what happened, and got the audience to help them figure out what story was coming next, which, of course, the kids absolutely loved.

First up was Tiana and her dream of having her own restaurant. This was the shortest of the 4 stories, and it was just one main dance scene, inside her restaurant, but it was really great. I loved all the costumes, and it was such a fun way to kick off the show.

Next was Snow White. “Some day when my dreams come true”…and I loved the 7 dwarves in this story. They were huge, which is kinda ironic, and they looked exactly like the dwarves in the original 1937 animated movie.

After Snow White came Cinderella, which was split into two parts, with the intermission between them. This was one of the kids’ favourites, but of course I only know that because of the loud screams that erupted when they realised what story was starting. Because it was only a 1.45 hour show, all the stories were very condensed, so the first time you meet Cinderella, she and her stepmother and sisters are just getting the invitation to the ball…and then the mice make her dress, the fairy godmother show up and bibbity bobbity boo, they’re at the ball. Then after intermission, the Prince goes looking for her and boom. There she is. They did come off the stage at one point and try the glass slipper on a few girls in the front row, which was super neat. The horses and carriage were amazing. The horses were so impressive! I mean, just look at them!

The last (and definietly my favourite part) was the story of Rapunzel. I believe this tour was the first to use a full story of Rapunzel, but they did it really really well. I think what I liked most about this one was that there was a lot of flying on harnesses, which reminded me of Cirque Du Soleil last year. While I didn’t manage to get many good pictures of them up in the hair (hahaha! See what I did there…? Gosh. They were swinging and flying wrapped up in Rapunzel’s hair…), you can kind of get the idea with these ones:

They also managed to actually create Maximus, which was awesome because he’s one the best characters in the movie, even if he is only a horse. How they skated in that horse costume though…goodness knows how.

The very last song was rather exciting. As Rapunzel finally realises she’s the lost princess, and they go to the castle…all the other Disney Princes and Princesses show up, and they did a huge ball scene, introducing the other princesses with a snippet of one of the main songs from their movies. There was Ariel and Eric, Jasmine and Aladdin, Aurora and Prince Phillip, Mulan and Shang, Belle and Prince Adam, as well as Cinderella and Prince Charming, Snow White and her Prince (who is never named in the movie), Tiana and Prince Naveen, and Rapunzel and Flynn/Eugene.

It was wonderful. The whole thing. One of my favourite things about the set was that the castle changed with every story, and it was so smoothly done. They even brought out a tower for Rapunzel, and changed the forrest-y look with screen things that went in front of the castle.

So! If you’re a Disney fan and you hear Disney on Ice is headed to your town, do go and check it out. Tickets were incredibly reasonable (under $50 for where we were sitting, quite close), and it was just a lot of fun. I’m super keen to go next year if they come back, and see what the theme is then, and which Princesses have the main stories. So awesome.
