Wanna know the secret to stay motivated as a blogger?

Of course you do! One of the hardest things to do is to stay motivated as a blogger, especially a newbie blogger. All the good intentions are there, but as I say, good intentions don’t make a good blog.

Like anything in life – learning a new skill, getting fit, playing the piano – you need to take the time and be consistent in order for change and good stuff to happen. Motivation comes from a place of desire: if you’re loving what you’re doing, if it’s changing people’s lives, if it’s helping them achieves their goals, if it’s paying your bills even … if you have a desire to make something happen, then you’re going to have the motivation to make it happen.

But it’s easier said than done, right?

Because here’s the thing: blogging is hard!

It can be tough when you’re starting out and you’re not sure what you’re doing or how to use Pinterest to grow your blog or engage with your Instagram community. Finding motivation with your blogging can be rough when you’re not seeing the results you want to be seeing.

So how do you stay motivated as a blogger?

Blog about something that sets your heart on fire, that you’re passionate about, but that you can see is helping people be encouraged, inspired, entertained, and educated.

Without that, you’re not going to want to open up that draft document to type out ‘yet another post’.

But ‘being motivated’ and ‘writing about something you love that’s also helping people’ is a great idea in theory. But how does one put that into practice?

Here are some quick-fire tips to stay motivated as a blogger

  1. Remember your ‘why’
  2. Engage with your community
  3. Show up
  4. Get some accountability
  5. Write something every day
  6. Figure out what works and what doesn’t

Remember your ‘why’

Why did you start your blog in the first place? What’s that thing that makes you excited, that makes you want to write something or share something? What makes your heart sing and your speech come alive when you talk about it? If you remember the ‘why’ of what you’re doing, and you remember that every single day, you will start to see that motivation.

Engage with your community

Whether that be predominantly Instagram, or Facebook, or TikTok. Creating a community around your blog will motivate you to create content for not just your ‘followers’ but for your friends. When you begin to understand why they love hanging out on your blog, why they follow your posts and comment when you share something, you’ll realise that what you have to say is impacting others. That your story is a story worth sharing.

Show up

Show up and keep going and you’ll find your groove. Being consistent and showing up and doing the same thing each day is going to help with your motivation. You’ll be excited to comment back on a post or to see what your fellow bloggers are sharing that day. If you have Instagram, show up in your feed and in your Stories. Share what you’re doing on your blog and behind the scenes.

Get some accountability

Just like going to the gym, often in blogging, having accountability can make or break you. When I first started blogging I didn’t really know anyone else personally who was blogging. It was pretty different back in 2009, and in those first few years, I was all over the place. So my advice to you is to get a blogging buddy. Or a blogging squad! Or a Facebook Group! Write something every day

When you learn a new skill or you want to grow in the skills that you have, repetition is key. You need to be honing your talents, and blogging is the same. So write something every day. Whether it be a full blog post or a single paragraph. The more you write and create, the more you will shape and grow your gifts

Figure out what works and what doesn’t

Not everything you blog about is going to hit home with people. And that’s okay! Figure out what does and do more of that. Look at your Analytics, your insights, your comments; are people engaging with your content? Are they repinning your Pins, sharing your Instagram posts, or Liking your Facebook links? It’s good to take stock of your analytics and see what’s working every quarter.

Those are just some ways you can stay motivated with your blog. It takes time to come to a place where you’re posting consistently, gaining followers, and growing your blogging community. And it can be disheartening when things don’t go the way you want them to.

But with these tips up your sleeve, you’ll be well on your way!
