What is Broken Dove by Dani Francis about?

Broken Dove by Dani Francis picks up right after Wren Darlington blew her cover as a double agent inside Silver Elite and fled to allied territory. She’s safe for now, but the fight against the Primes is far from over.

While her lover and former commander Cross Redden works to sabotage the Primes from the inside, Wren throws herself into helping the Uprising take them down for good. Trust doesn’t come easy on the Mod base, though, and Wren can’t shake the feeling that Cross is hiding something of his own.

Things get even more complicated when Grayson Blake, her closest friend from her Silver Elite days, turns up again. Gray gets her in a way she never expected, and as the war between Mods and Primes grows uglier by the day, Wren’s forced to face some brutal questions about who she’s really fighting for, and who she’s willing to lose.

My thoughts on Broken Dove

I gave the first in this series, Silver Elite, 5 stars and mostly because it was a vibes read. I hadn’t read a dystopian-type book in a while, and it just hit right. I had high, high hopes for Broken Dove.

And look, for the most part, my high hopes were met. Not as much as Silver Elite, though, and I think part of that was that not a lot actually happens in Broken Dove. It feels like a second book – a little bit filler.

But before I get into that, what I did like: The new location of Wren with the Uprising and meeting a slew of new characters (or characters who were on briefly in the first book), was fun and gave another layer to the story. When things did start happening, they really happened, and it got intense.

I do think that there was good character development for some of the characters (not all though), and we hear a bunch of backstory which helps build out the world a lot more, which is good.

Some of the things that brought it down to 3.5 stars for me: Cross basically wasn’t in it. Yes, we get Gray, and I do like him a lot, but Cross is definitely taking a back seat in this one. They had this really solidily built/building foundation in the first book and then … poof. Gone. It was like a love triangle but not really because Cross wasn’t there …

So was it as good as Silver Elite? Not for me, buuuut I did still enjoy it and will be continuing the series for sure.
