Being a teenage witch--or rock star--is tougher than it looks! But maybe enemies can become friends...or more? Flying brooms and electric guitars set hearts aflame in this fantastically fizzy graphic novel.
When Margot meets Elena, emotions run high, magic is in the air, and doughnuts...float? One is a stressed-out witch trying to get her potions business off the ground, the other is a struggling rock musician whose band is going nowhere. Neither of them are having a good time! No wonder things quickly escalate from words to literal sparks flying when they first meet.
Could this be the start of a delicious new relationship...or is a bad-luck curse leading them to certain doom?

What is Doughnuts and Doom by Balazs Lorinczi about?
Doughnuts and Doom by Balazs Lorinczi tells the story of Margot, an anxious witch who is a brilliant potion-maker but a lousy charms doer.
After a terrible day at the Witch Hub failing her charms exam, Margot storms off to pick up doughnuts to drown her sorrows. But when the shop doesn’t have her favourite flavour, the frustration of the day suddenly bubbles to the surface and she explodes in anger, accidentally cursing doughnut-shop worker, Elena.
As Doughnuts and Doom plays out, Margot and Elean have to figure out how to navigate their terrible first encounter, and why the curse seems to be lingering on Elena, who just wants to have a good gig with her bandmate, Bob.
My thoughts on this graphic novel
Doughnuts and Doom by Balazs Lorinczi was a really sweet graphic novel. I enjoyed the doughnuts and the doom correlation (great title!), and how the seemingly ordinary things in life, like buying doughnuts, were woven together with magic and witches flying about on their brooms. I loved that combination of ‘normal’ life and the magic elements of this world.
Margot was a great character, and you could see her growth in just the 100-odd pages of the graphic novel. Her familiar, something that I believe all witches in this world have, was a snake called Stanely and honestly … Stanley was brilliant. He was more like a golden retriever, as mentioned in the book, and the way that Lorinczi draws him as a snake but with dog tendencies was done really well.
Elena just wanted to play music, have more people show up to her gigs, and stop having altercations with the bar owner, Vince. But her encounter with Margot puts all that into a spin, and you see her going from feisty to miserable quite quickly.
Overall thoughts
While this was a really cute graphic novel, and the illustrations were really cool, I do wish it were a bit longer. I would love to know things such as why the head witch at the Witch Hub has it out for Margot, and also about Dave the delivery man, who seemed to be a bit of a filler character. What’s his deal? The relationship between Margot and Elena seem quite rushed, and I would have liked more in the middle I think.
Having said that, this was a fun graphic novel about witches, doughnuts, snake familiars, and music. If you’re looking for an LGBTQ+ graphic novel to read this Halloween (or whenever!), then pick up Doughnuts and Doom.
