The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose follows Sarah Morgan, a high-powered defense attorney in D.C., who suddenly finds herself defending her husband, accused of murdering his lover.

Before this, Sarah’s life was going pretty well. She’d just turned 33 and was made a partner at her firm—life was good and on track. Her husband, Adam, wasn’t quite as fortunate. He’s a writer still waiting for his big break, and with Sarah always at the office, he feels the strain on their relationship. So, when he meets Kelly Summers, an affair begins.

When Kelly is found dead (stabbed) at the secluded house she and Adam were staying in, Adam is arrested for her murder.

“Did he love her? He loved parts of her. But the question isn’t whether he loved her. The question is… did he kill her?”

My Thoughts on The Perfect Marriage

I’ve been hearing about this book for a while, but to be honest, thrillers aren’t usually my type of story. I’ll read murder mysteries on occasion (hello, Agatha Christie), but I don’t often pick up books like this.

However, the audiobook became available on Libby, so I thought I’d give it a go—and I did enjoy it.

“Even when you have nothing left in your life, hope is the one thing that can never be taken away.”

The story is told from both Sarah’s and Adam’s perspectives, so you get both sides—the one having the affair and now accused of murder, and the wife of the alleged murderous cheater, defending her husband. As the story unfolds, you learn more about their backstory, their relationships with others, what was going on with Kelly, and how things ended up the way they did.

I’ve only read a few Jeneva Rose books at this point, but I’m starting to gather that a twist is a big part of her writing. I actually called this twist pretty early on, so that took away a bit of the gasp factor near the end, which is probably why a lot of people love this book.

But don’t get me wrong—even though I guessed it, the twist was still great, and I think she wrote it really well. In fact, I really enjoyed the whole book, the characters, and how it all played out.

While I won’t be giving it 4 or 5 stars, it’s definitely a solid 3.5 for me, and I think I’ll keep reading Rose’s books.
