For King and Country - Burn the Ships Concert - Festival One - Mystery Creek Hamilton New Zealand

So light a match, leave the past, burn the ships. And don’t you look back. – For King and Country

You may or may not have heard of For King and Country, but these two brothers (Joel and Luke Smallbone) are incredible song writers and musicians. A few weeks ago I had the great joy of heading down to Festival One, an annual music festival here in New Zealand, held at a place called Mystery Creek. While the festival runs for the entire long weekend (Friday to Monday), I just went down for the Saturday, and planned it so I was there when For King and Country were playing. And by golly did I plan that well.

Not only did they sing a range of songs from their latest album, Burn the Ships, but they also sang some of their other hits, and had the most brilliant mini talks between songs. As well as giving us a little insight into their lives (like many musicians do), they also told us the story behind some of their songs. While the messages in their lyrics are sometimes clear as day, other times they’re a little cryptic. For their album title track, Burn the Ships, the story behind the song gave it that much more meaning. Rather than try and explain it to you, check out this clip from one their concerts, with Joel explaining the meaning behind the song.

Their energy on stage was phenomenal, and as well as singing their lungs out, they picked up drum sticks and cymbals, and at one point, a mega phone. If you ever get the chance to see For King and Country in concert, you seriously need to go. It was an amazing concert and I would go again in a heart beat if they ever return to New Zealand.
