Labour Day Weekend on Kaipara Harbour

Last month, the weekend of the 26th of October to be exact, was Labour weekend here in New Zealand. Labour day is the fourth Monday in October every year, and it’s always a public holiday. This year we headed north to the Kaipara Harbour and spend the weekend at the beach.

Labour Day means Labour Weekend really, because more often than not, people will head away for the long weekend. We were no different and this year we rented a bach, and headed further up north to a little town on the beach. It was a really cute little place with only 3 roads, two of them dead-ends, and only a little dairy (like a corner store) as a shop. We went up on Friday night and came back on Monday evening. Saturday was really lovely weather, and I even got sunburnt.

We took Bonnie the dog with us and she absolutely loved the beach! She’d been before, but she could have easily just stayed on the beach all day, I suspect. While I spent a lot of the time reading (I managed to read two whole books and make my way through half a third), we did get out and about the town a bit. They had a wharf, where there were fishermen trying to catch things off the end, and a Sunday market, and birds! So many birds!

Anyway, it was a great weekend away. What made it better was that by the time I started work again on Tuesday, it was a short week, so I only had a day and a half of work that week before another weekend.
