I’ve caught myself saying ‘I never used to…’ a few times in the past month or so.
Maybe because I’m getting old (okay, okay so I’m not even 30 yet, but you know what it’s like!), or maybe because I’ve seen a bunch of photos on Facebook Memories pop up and I just always find myself thinking about the things I used to do, or in this case, the things I never used to do. I thought it might be a fun wee exercise in reminiscing for me to make a little list of all the things that ‘I never used to’ do.
I never used to … read as much as I do now
Gasp! I know. You’d think with the abundance of down time I had during high school and university I would have read a lot more. But no. My annual bulk reading really didn’t start until I moved to England, where I didn’t have many friends to hang out with (shout to the very few! You guys are amazing!), the winters were cold and dark, and the library was literally a 5 minute walk from my house. Since then I’ve read at least 40 books a year, and there’s no going back.
I never used to … wear dresses
I was a staunch believer in trousers and jeans as a teen. Sure I would wear the odd dress now and then, but for the most part it was just pants (a phrase which here means definitely trousers, English readers) and t-shirts. My mother would try to get my into dresses on nice occasions, but it was a mission and a half. I was not a fan, to say the least.
I never used to … wear trousers
This contradicts what I just said, I know, but after my trousers-only phase, I discovered that actually leggings were the dream pants, and you wore dresses and skirts with leggings, so wear them I must. I had maybe one pair of jeans that I wore on occasion, but most of my time in England was spent in dresses and skirts.
I’m very pleased to say that both the trousers-only and dresses-only phases have both passed, and I am now a mix-it-up kind of dresser, with a semi-ridiculous collection of both exciting trou and pretty skirts/dresses.
I never used to … tie my hair up
During high school I used to wear my hair just as it came; natural, down, side parting. This meant that I was continuously tucking it behind my ear, or playing with it, so it got greasy fast and I’d wash it every day. So bad. These days I seem to alternate between down and up, and however I wear it it’s also out of my face. I also wash it every second night, and while that’s still not ideal, it’s what I’m working with at the moment. Also, dry shampoo was the best thing I ever discovered.
Along similar lines, I never use to braid my hair. I would get my mum to French braid it every so often when I couldn’t do it myself, but now a day rarely goes by when I could have some sort of braid going on.
I never used to … like dancing
I was that kid who definitely stood in the circle of awkward teen dancing with everyone else, but rather than getting my groove on with the others, I would do the torso sway. You know the one; your feet stayed planted to the floor, and you just sort of move your torso from side to side. I never knew what to do with my hands (still kinda don’t but now I don’t care so meh; crazy town up in here), so I would just click along or hold onto whatever long necklace I was wearing that day. That all changed when I started going to Zumba. Now I’ve the moves, you guys. Okay, so rarely does life call for salsa or reggaeton, but because I don’t care about getting sweaty in a room full of strangers, dancing right at the front of the class and trying to mimic my Polish Zumba instructor (shout out to her; she’s amazing), I no longer care about dancing in public. In fact, I love it. Who wants to go dancing?
What are some of the things you never used to do? Why have the changed? Or not changed? Let me know!
