New Movie Releases in 2014 - This Splendid Shambles

Even though moving country and seeing 99% less movies that I used to with our weekly free movie tickets at home has scared me deeply, and I still haven’t seen movies that have been on DVD for ages now, that I have wanted to see since they were advertised as coming to the movies, I am excited about a lot of new movies that are coming out next year. I’ve just been browsing through IMDB and what movies they say are coming to the big screen next year, and there are a few that I didn’t even release. But that made the discovery all the more exciting. Today I thought I’d let you in on some of the films that I’m excited about. I’m sure there are a lot more (e.g. Hunger Games: Mocking Jay will be out some time next I think, as will another Hobbit movie, I’m sure), but 8 movies is a good start, yeah?

X-Men: Days of Future Past (May 22 UK)

Another X-Men movie! What! Exciting! I love these movies, and have yet to force my family to watch them, though they really really should. Apparently, in this movie, “The X-Men send Wolverine to the past to change a major historical event that could globally impact man and mutant kind.” – IMDB

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (May 2 UK)

Yes, I unashamedly love super hero movies, though, like a perfect example of what I said in the opening paragraph, I have yet to see Iron Man 3 yet. Sigh. Anyway, Captain America. Really enjoyed the first one, though I haven’t seen it in a while, and shall be looking forward to seeing the second one.

The Maze Runner (Feb 14 UK)

You may recall my review of The Maze Runner a few weeks ago, but it only seemed vaguely familiar that they were making it into a movie when I saw this listed on IMDB, so perhaps someone mentioned it somewhere. I really enjoyed the book, so I hope that the movie is just as good.

“Set in a post-apocalyptic world, young Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they’re all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow “runners” for a shot at escape.” -IMDB

Divergent (April 4 UK)

This is probably one of my favourite dystopian books that I’ve read – dare I say it, I think I enjoyed it more than the Hunger Games! Eek! – so I’m both super excited to see how they’ve done it, and completely terrified that they will ruin it. By the sounds of the description of the movie on IMDB, they should stick to the story…one can only hope!

The Fault in our Stars (supposedly June 6 US)
I loved this book, like I think everyone who reads it does. John Green is such a great author, and his characters are amazing. I really hope that they do this movie the justice it deserves. I couldn’t find a movie poster for it, so that’s the book cover, but the description on IMDB says:

“Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel’s other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.” – IMDB

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (July 4 UK)
There’s a second one!? What! Exciting! I remember I watched the first one on the plane back from America, and I remember trying not to laugh too loudly. Great kids’ movie, and I can’t wait to see what the next one will be like! Couldn’t find a movie poster, but here’s what IMDB says about it:

While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. Maleficent (May 30 UK)
A Disney movie to add to the mix. I’m so looking forward to this movie. A lot. It’s about time they did a Disney movie from the perspective of one of the villains, and what villain better to start with than the ridiculously evil Maleficent? can’t wait!

Veronica Mars (no release date yet)
Possibly the most talked about thing this year amongst Veronica Mars fans. I got on the Veronica Mars band wagon a bit late, and only started watching it in um…when was it? 2011 I think. I borrowed the dvds from my friend, and watched all 4 seasons in about two weeks. It.Was.Awesome. I couldn’t get enough of it, and I think I died a little when those very last episode credits started to roll. How excited was I (and the rest of the Veronica-Mars-loving world) when they started talking about a Veronica Mars movie, and created the best Kickstarter ever? More than I can possibly put into words.
