Woman sitting on the ground with a laptop on her lap. Writing reads: common blogging fears and how to overcome them

So you’ve got some blogging fears?

You’re not a good writer. You have no eye for design. You don’t have anything worth sharing. All common blogging fears that need to be overcome, stat.

I started my first blog in about 2008. It was called something odd like ‘Cupcakes and Chuckles’ or something equally cutesy, and I posted about my life as a Uni student. It wasn’t grand. It wasn’t neat. It wasn’t tidy.

But I didn’t have any fears about it. I was sharing what I wanted and got excited if a few people here and there actually read it. The fears came. But they came later.

Blogging fears hit me harder when I scrapped that blog and I started again. In 2010 I began what-would-become This Splendid Shambles. It was, at first, a place for me to share my stories about all the cities and countries I was adventuring to while I was living in England. Then I started sharing book reviews, and DIY ideas, movies I’d seen and food I’d tried.

The fears began creeping.

Fears like ‘why would anyone read this?’ and ‘what if I say something that’s actually wrong?’ They were things like ‘what if I offend the author when I don’t like their book?’ and ‘what if I’m never allowed back to that restaurant because I didn’t do their menu justice?’ Then it was more practical fears like ‘what if my blog isn’t good looking?’ and ‘what if the pictures I’m using aren’t the ones I should be using!?’

Whether you already have a blog or you’re yet to start one, fears and worries like these often come creeping in, sneaking around the corners of your mind and lodging themselves where they’re not welcome.

It’s normal. It’s human. But it’s something we all need to overcome.

Here are a few common blogging fears you need to overcome:

“I’m not a writer.”

No one starts off ‘being a writer’. You’re not born with a pen in hand or words on your heart. Like anything you do in life, you learn. If you love to share your story, do it. It can be a bit of a mess, it can be a jumble. But like learning the piano or taking up photography, practice makes better. Not perfect, but better. (Also on a practical note: reading helps.)

“Who will even read my blog?”

There are about 7.6 billion people on this planet. Do you know how many of those people are internet users? 4.66 billion. It’s unlikely that there is not a single one of those people who wants to read your blog. Keeping it real for ya. Even if it’s just your grandma and your neighbour, those are two people who are reading your blog and are hopefully being inspired, encourage, entertained or educated. And that’s what makes it worthwhile.

“I’m not good with social media.”

Guess what? You don’t have to be. You can simply show up, learn as you go. And if it’s all too much, you can outsource.

Keep in your zone of genius, and if that’s writing up a storm and sharing your story with the world, then so be it! Hand over the things you struggle with to someone who lives for that. If you love writing captions but don’t like creating Instagram graphics, then outsource that to someone who loves creating graphics. Don’t love working with Pinterest? While it’s not a social media platform, it’s such a worthwhile tool for your blog. But if you don’t love making Pins, outsource!

It’s a win-win all around because you’re giving away tasks you don’t like doing, and someone is gaining tasks that they LOVE doing. And your social media and Pinterest presence is growing.

“I don’t know things like HTML or CSS or SEO…”

Again, neither did anyone at one stage. You learn. You take a course, you download some freebies, you ask for help. You take it one step at a time. And besides, you don’t need to know a lot of things you might think you need to know. SEO is important, but HTML and CSS? Meh. You can get some general understanding, but for the most part, you don’t need to know any of that to start.

“How do I even start?”

Ah the big question. If you don’t already have a blog but you’ve always wanted to start one, then actually doing the starting can be one of the biggest blogging fears you’ll ever have.

But the secret is to just start.

Find a tutorial to walk you through it. Find a Facebook Group to ask questions. Find a free course. Join a blogging membership. Take the overwhelm out of starting a blog by being proactive about it. Invest time and energy into resources that are going to help you start a successful blog.

So what now?

Work on overcoming those fears and any others that you have about blogging. It can be really tough, there’s no doubt about that, but there are some great resources and people out there to help you out.
