5 sequels to read this summer

It’s summer, and summer means reading. Hopefully sequels.

Because goodness knows my list of unread sequels is getting too long. Last year I shared 5 Sequels I Hope to Read this Summer, and I only ended up reading 2/5, which isn’t great. I was thinking about putting the other 3 on this year’s list, but I’m not going to. Instead, I’ve picked out five sequels from my shelves that I really must pick up this summer.

As I mentioned last year, from about now until the until of January The Big New Zealand Clear Out occurs. Now you may think that that’s something along the lines of summer cleaning, or massive sales, or finally getting rid of all those things stored in your garage that you actually no longer need. While you might be right, The Big New Zealand Clear Out is of people. Summer in New Zealand means the country pretty much shuts down. People head to the beach, to their baches, to visit family and friends, and are not often in the place they call home for much of the summer months.

And I’m the same. Most of my summer is taken up by travelling around the country, visiting friends and family, and getting in a whole lot of reading. Which means I should definitely have time to pick up some of these sequels.

Here are five sequels I really hope to pick up in the coming weeks.

5 Sequels I Hope to Read this Summer | 2017 – 2018Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
Series: Throne of Glass #4
Also in this series: Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Kingdom of Ash, The Assassin's Blade

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she's at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past . . .

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die just to see her again. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen's triumphant return.

Celaena’s epic journey has captured the hearts and imaginations of millions across the globe. This fourth volume will hold readers rapt as Celaena’s story builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

I have had this book for so long! Eek! 2017 saw be reading book 3 in the Throne of Glass series (which I love by the way), so I was pleased that I made it that far. This summer I really want to continue and pick up Queen of Shadows.

5 Sequels I Hope to Read this Summer | 2017 – 2018Ringer by Lauren Oliver
Series: Replica #2
Also in this series: Replica

Like its ambitious companion novel, Replica, this far-reaching novel by powerhouse bestselling author Lauren Oliver digs deep into questions of how to be a human being in a world where humanity cannot be taken for granted.

In the world outside the Haven Institute, Lyra and Caelum are finding it hard to be human—and neither of them knows where they belong or who they can trust. When Caelum leaves without warning to pursue the dream of a place he belongs, Lyra follows him, convinced that together they will hunt down a cure for the illness that’s slowly consuming her mind. But what they uncover is a shocking connection to their past—even as their future seems in danger of collapsing.

After discovering the uncomfortable truth about her connection to the Haven Institute, Gemma struggles to return to her normal life. But when she learns that her controlling and powerful father has new plans for Lyra and Caelum, Gemma and her boyfriend, Pete, leave in the middle of the night to warn them of the danger they face. When an untimely accident derails them, they are mistaken for the escaped replicas and seized by strangers hired to capture them. The Haven Institute wasn’t destroyed after all, and now Gemma is the one behind the walls.

The concept of Lauren Oliver’s latest series is so interesting. You read one perspective one way, then  you literally flip the book and read the other the other way. Genius. I quite enjoyed the first in this seiners, Replica, so would love to pick up this recent release

5 Sequels I Hope to Read this Summer | 2017 – 2018The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic by Leigh Bardugo, Sarah Kipin

Love speaks in flowers. Truth requires thorns.

Travel to a world of dark bargains struck by moonlight, of haunted towns and hungry woods, of talking beasts and gingerbread golems, where a young mermaid's voice can summon deadly storms and where a river might do a lovestruck boy's bidding but only for a terrible price.

Inspired by myth, fairy tale, and folklore, #1 New York Times-bestselling author Leigh Bardugo has crafted a deliciously atmospheric collection of short stories filled with betrayals, revenge, sacrifice, and love.
Perfect for new readers and dedicated fans, these tales will transport you to lands both familiar and strange--to a fully realized world of dangerous magic that millions have visited through the novels of the Grishaverse.
This collection of six stories includes three brand-new tales, all of them lavishly illustrated with art that changes with each turn of the page, culminating in six stunning full-spread illustrations as rich in detail as the stories themselves.

Although technically not a sequel, but an anthology of stories in the same world, it’s the next logical read having finished Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. I adore the Grishaverse, so am really excited to pick this up!

5 Sequels I Hope to Read this Summer | 2017 – 2018Fireblood by Elly Blake

Against all odds, Ruby has defeated the villainous Frost King and melted his throne of ice. But the bloodthirsty Minax that was trapped inside is now haunting her kingdom and everyone she loves. The answers to its demise may lie to the south in Sudesia, the land of the Firebloods, and a country that holds the secrets to Ruby’s powers and past…

Despite warnings from her beloved Arcus, Ruby accompanies a roguish Fireblood named Kai to Sudesia, where she must master her control of fire in a series of trials to gain the trust of the suspicious Fire Queen. Only then can she hope to access the knowledge that could defeat the rampaging Minax—which grows closer every moment. But as sparks fly in her moments alone with Kai, Ruby no longer knows whom to trust. The fates of two kingdoms are now in her hands.

I read the first in this series, Frostblood, earlier in the year and really enjoyed it. This, the second in the series, came out in September and I really need to read it. I don’t own this one yet so I might venture to the library to issue it.

5 Sequels I Hope to Read this Summer | 2017 – 2018Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton
Series: Rebel of the Sands #2
Also in this series: Rebel of the Sands

This is not about blood or love. This is about treason.

Nearly a year has passed since Amani and the rebels won their epic battle at Fahali. Amani has come into both her powers and her reputation as the Blue-Eyed Bandit, and the Rebel Prince's message has spread across the desert - and some might say out of control. But when a surprise encounter turns into a brutal kidnapping, Amani finds herself betrayed in the cruellest manner possible.

Stripped of her powers and her identity, and torn from the man she loves, Amani must return to her desert-girl's instinct for survival. For the Sultan's palace is a dangerous one, and the harem is a viper's nest of suspicion, fear and intrigue. Just the right place for a spy to thrive... But spying is a dangerous game, and when ghosts from Amani's past emerge to haunt her, she begins to wonder if she can trust her own treacherous heart.

The first in Alwyn Hamilton’s series, Rebel of the Sands, was one of my favourite books this year. I must get my hands on the second one this summer!
