Looks like we made it … to Shania Twain.
Shania Twain hit up New Zealand this past month, putting on three shows – two in Auckland, and one in Dunedin – and after the roller coaster ride of sad-we-didn’t-get-tickets to they-announced-another-show-ohmygosh-we’re-going, the day finally arrived.
I had actually semi forgotten about it right up until the Sunday before our Wednesday concert – that’s how busy my December was. How could I forget Shania!? But all was well, and we grabbed dinner before heading to Spark Arena. We had managed to get seats on the flat of the arena, and shout out to my friend for picking the edge seats because Shania literally walked right down our aisle twice. It didn’t even occur to me to reach out for a sneaky touch, but my friend went right for it, and while I was busy taking photos, I got one of her touching Shania’s hand. Needless to say she lost her mind (friend, not Shania), and there was a lot of screaming happening.

The Set List
The set list was made up of mostly her older stuff, with a new of her Now album songs thrown in, which was to be expected because it was the Now tour. Her new stuff is alright, but it’s nothing on her older stuff, and I would guarantee that everyone in the arena would share that thought.

Opening Act
Huge shout out to Bastian Baker, who was the opening act, and has been touring with Shania for the duration. I hadn’t heard of him before, but have now listened to his whole set-titled album – excellent tunes, highly recommend.

Stage Set Up
The stage set was made up of five giant white boxes, which moved around a bit, and there were projections shown on them which changed with the song. While it looked cool and was pretty effective, for some reason I didn’t love it. There were about 4 or 5 dancers, and the musicians who moved around the stage, but it did feel like this weird middle ground of too few people on stage and too many. It either needed to be dialed down or up.
There was also a really odd water projection that I didn’t get, but that’s okay. The stage set up is in no way what people come to a concert for, so while I found it a little odd, I was just super pumped to see Shania (even if she were lip-syncing a lot of it).

The drummer
Okay, so the drummer needs her own shout out. Elijah Wood was absolutely incredible. Not only is she a phenomenal drummer, but she absolutely conquered the stage in every song, and physically was moved with her drum kit around the stage, and up onto the floating boxes, way up in the air. Her energy was insane, and her hair was epic.

It was such a great concert! The highlight was definitely when Shania moved to a little middle stage (about 10m from where we were), and it was just her and the guitar singing From This Moment On. Beautiful!
Did you go to any of Shania Twain’s NOW international tour shows?
