What is The Magical Matcha Teashop by Natasha Bache about?
The Magical Matcha Teashop by Natasha Bache is a super cute, cosy, magical small-town romance. It follows the story of Grace, who has moved back home in Lavender Hollow with her parents after a breakup, and the magical moments she has while she’s there.
Desperate for a job, Grace will take anything she finds. But being a small town that doesn’t have a high turnover of staff anywhere, that’s proving difficult. Then she discovers Matcha Made In Heaven, and asks the shop own, Yoji, for a job. He’s hesitant, but there’s something about Grace and he gives her a shot.
She Grace starts her first week at Matcha Made In Heaven, she learns the art of matcha making, meets people in the town (including the handsome Max), and reconnects with her past.
As she begins to make matcha for the townspeople, some interesting things start happening. Is it just matcha, or is something else going on … ?
My thoughts on The Magical Matcha Teashop
The Magical Matcha Teashop was such an adorable book. It’s been likened to the stores in the Dream Harbor series (which I really enjoy!), and I would say that those remarks are definitely warranted. Minus the magic (in Dream Harbor).
Grace and Max were great characters. Max is going through a divorce and working through life after marriage, and Grace has just broken up with her fiancé, so they have that in common and connect quite quickly. Of course, there’s much more to both stories than you initially realise, and that plays out over the course of the book really nicely. Max was a fun, nerdy leading man, and he has a BOAT, which he lets Grace stay on to get out of her parents’ hair for a while.
“Maybe it’s not about what people think they want. Maybe it’s about offering them something they didn’t know they needed.”
Yoji, the matcha shop owner, is adorable. You learn about his wife, who passed away, and the love they shared of matcha tea together, and what it means for him that Grace is in his life, helping him with the shop. Grace’s parents, especially her mother, are crazy but in a loving sort of way?
I really enjoyed the references to nerdy things throughout this book, the small town of Lavender Hollow (set somewhere south of London but in a fictional town), the little bits of Japanese and matcha history you get, and the slight magical vibes. While the conflicts and the storyline were pretty predictable, that’s what you want with a book like this.
If you liked Dream Harbor, or other cosy, magical stories, this is the one for you!
