To all the books I love in theory - an ode to unread books.

To all the books I love in theory …

To all the books I saw across a crowded book store floor; the books with covers that caught my eye on the new books display; the books that were recommended to me by Goodreads or friends.

To all the books I scored for $2 at a book sale; the books I paid full price for; the books I pre-ordered with excitement.

To all the books that are sequels of stories I gave 5 stars to; the books that are written by authors that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading; the books that have been classics since the beginning of time.

To all the books that I saved online to come back to at a later date; the books that have been added to lists; the books that I myself have recommended to others.

To all the books with epic story lines; the books filled with complex characters; the books that teach us a lesson.

To all the books that tell of kick-ass heroes and those who love nothing more than a cuppa and a good book of their own; the books that challenge how we see the world and those spectacular human beings it holds; to those books that bring a little hope back into the crazy universe we call home.

To all the books with conflicts and resolutions, and those with conflict and no resolutions; those books that bring out the best in us; the books that make us smile, cry, get angry, rise up, simmer down, relax, realise, laugh, love.

To all the books I took photographs of to share on social media; the books I Tweeted about with joyous fervour; those books I added to Book Haul blog posts.

To all the books I have bought on a whim; the books I went out of my way to buy; the books I welcomed with open arms into my ever-growing collection.

To all the books I love in theory, those books I still want to read, the books I’ve had for far too long.

To all those books I own but have never read.

To all those books, I’m sorry.

I had good plans to read you.Β  But I didn’t. I haven’t.

I will read you one day.

Perhaps. Maybe. We’ll see.

To all those books still sitting on my shelves, waiting for ‘one day’,

Your time will come.

Perhaps. Maybe. We’ll see.

After all, I love you in theory … but reality is a whole other kettle of fish.
