Wonderland Exhibition Te Papa Tongarewa

We found Wonderland.

Get lost again in the Hallway of Doors, climb inside the White Rabbit’s house and try to figure out who stole the tarts. – website

The Wonderland Exhibition by ACMI arrived at Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand in Wellington at the end of 2019, and in the first few days of the new decade a few friends and I headed down to the capital to check it out.

The Wonderland Exhibition was created in Melbourne and after a season there, it’s in New Zealand until March 8th. I won’t give too much away about the exhibition because it’s quite interactive and there are a lot of different rooms to explore and things to do when you wander through. But I did want to show you a few pictures to tempt you; it really is a wonderful exhibition and I highly recommend checking it out.

The exhibition takes you through the history of Alice in Wonderland and the imagination of Lewis Carroll, right from the early days when Alice was merely an idea of a story all the way through to today, with the more recent films such as the 2016 Through the Looking Glass adaptation. Sketches, photographs, snippets of text, old film clips, costumes, masks, posters, riddles to solve, and so much more await around every corner and it’s a joy to explore.

One of the coolest aspects was an interactive wall, where you design a playing card, scan both it and your face into a little machine, which is then projected on a big wall. Your card and your face then hold buckets of paint and run around a garden, much like the cards in the story who paint all the white roses red.

Of course there’s much more to discover and if you’re in Wellington in the next month or so then definitely make it a priority to check out.The gift shop is also very cute and I bought a few prints for the wall. Oops, but also no regrets.
