10 blog post ideas for when you're stuck in self isolation

Need some self-isolation blog post ideas?

If your blog is anything like mine and you like to share about all the things you get up to while you’re out and about in your cities, then being in self-isolation or lockdown is doing nothing for your blog content. My heart goes out to travel bloggers who are suddenly banned from travelling. I hope you’re finding things to write about during this time.

This Splendid Shambles is a combination of all the things I love, and some of those things include sharing about the events I help run or that I attend, about concerts and shows I go to, restaurants and bars that I’ve discovered, road trips I’ve taken, animals at the zoo I’ve spent too long watching. When the ability to leave your house is suddenly restricted to ‘walks around your neighbourhood’ then blog content is suddenly lacking.

That being the case, I thought I’d compile a list of things you can blog about from the comfort of your own bed home, which are still great ways to engage your readers without breaking any self-isolation or lockdown restrictions, especially if you write about a little of everything.

Book Review

You won’t go far into the depths of this blog without finding book reviews; reading is one of my favourite things to do. You don’t have to be a big reader to write a book review. All you have to do (apart from actually reading a book) is share a little about the story (or concept if it’s non-fiction) and then what you thought of it. Take a photo of the book (or find the cover on Goodreads) and post it.

Movie Review

Again, super simple, super entertaining. Watch a movie and write your thoughts on it. For more entertainment, write a running commentary as you’re watching it and share that in a blog post. Why not try one of the classics or old films you’ve never seen before? Or a murder mystery where you try to guess whodunit in a written stream-of-consciousness?

Share your favourite part of your home

Seeing as we’re all stuck at home during this time, why not share your favourite spots in the house? Is it your lounge? Perhaps your happy place is in the kitchen, baking up a storm? Maybe it’s the front porch. Snap a photo and share it with your readers.

Tell a story

Just because you haven’t been out in X amount of days doesn’t mean that nothing is happening in your life, or that nothing has happened in the past. You are a walking story, and people love hearing other’s stories. Whether it’s a humourous tale, or a series one, pop a photo or two in there and you’ve got yourself a blog post.

Tell a story of an object

Over the years you’ve probably gathered items from family members, or been given by friends. Sometimes they’re family heirlooms, or just remind you of a great time in your life. Why not share about the object, and why you love it so much? Looking around my house, I can several items which I could share and tell the story of.

Give us a tutorial

Have a hobby that you can share a tutorial for? Perhaps you’re into macrame or watercolours? Maybe you love sewing or cooking? Whatever you love to do, why not share it with your readers. Give us a demo of how to do something new. You could try a new medium and give a video tutorial a go.

Revamp a post

Been blogging for a while? Why not head on back to some earlier posts and see if any of them need a revamp. Then share it with your readers on social media, or write a post with a list of the blog posts you’ve given a face-lift to. Not only does it bring new readers’ attention to older posts that may benefit from, but you may get some more interaction with those posts. I recently revamped my post on How to Make Fabric Bunting out of an Old Duvet Cover.

Photo Challenge

There are so many photo challenges out there on the internet, and these are really fun to share on social media. But why not take part in one and then share your posts on your blog? A few years ago I did the 100 Happy Days challenge, which was essentially just sharing a photo of something that makes you happy every day for 100 days. I then did a bit of a round-up every 25 days on my blog posts, so my readers could see all the days in one place. My Instagram photos were terrible back in 2014, but it was still a really fun wee challenge to do.

Link posts

Over on Blogger’s Bookshelf, we do a monthly round-up of fun book-related links that we’ve read over the past month. Here on This Splendid Shambles, I also used to do a monthly round-up post called the Link Lineup. It was a list of 10 links to websites, blogs, music, articles, and more that I’ve discovered and want to share with you guys. You could do something similar, but pick something from your niche if you have one. Sharing the blogging love is also a great way to show support in the blogging community during this time, too.

Mood boards

Mood boards and inspiration boards require no outside influence to create. For Halloween I created themed collages for different spooky things (vampires, werewolves, spiders, etc); I used to post a monthly piece called Current Colour Crush, where I shared images focused around a particular colour; and back in 2017, I created Harry Potter themed mood boards in celebration of September 1st. They’re a lot of fun to put together and just require some internet searching on your part.
