Woman in a hammock wearing a sunhat and reading a book. 'New Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024' written on top.

You know what’s wonderful about a new year? New books. And oof there’s a fantastic roundup of young adult book releases for summer 2024! I have added so many of these to my TBR both on Goodreads and The StoryGraph and I cannot wait to get my hands on them.

This list you’re about to devour is for Summer 2024 and covers some of the young adult book releases that are coming out between June and August. They’re a mix of romance books, fantasy books, general fiction, and a few horror/thrillers thrown in there too, and I’ve sorted them by release month.

If you’re looking for even more books being released this year, check out this list of the most anticipated book releases for 2024. Let’s get into it!

Young Adult Book Releases for Summer in 2024

June 2024 YA Book Releases

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Wish You Weren't Here by Erin Baldwin

Juliette doesn’t hate Priya Pendley.

At least, not in the way teen movies say she should hate the hot popular girl. They don’t do cat fights, love triangles, or betrayal. To survive their intertwined small town lives, they agree to a truce: complete group projects without fighting, don’t gossip to mutual friends, and stand on opposite sides of photos so it’s easy to crop each other out.

Priya seems to have everything during the school year—social media stardom, the handsome track captain boyfriend, and millions of adoring fans. And Juliette is at peace with that, because she has Fogridge Sleepaway Camp, the one place she never feels like “too much.”

But Juliette’s dreams of five Priya-free weeks in paradise are shattered when her rival shows up on move-in day... as her cabinmate, no less. Juliette is determined to enjoy her final summer at camp, even if it means (gag) tolerating Priya Pendley, but fate seems has other plans. If Juliette can’t find something to like about her situation—and about Priya—she risks hating the only home she’s ever had, right before she says goodbye to it forever.

Okay, this sounds like so much fun! And also, that title and cover. *chefs kiss* With You Weren’t Here is Baldwin’s debut novel, and I’m looking forward to picking it up when it’s released in June!

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024We Shall Be Monsters by Tara Sim
ISBN: 0593407423
Series: We Shall be Monsters #1
Published by Nancy Paulsen Books
on 25 June 2024
Goodreads

Frankenstein meets Indian mythology in this twisty, darkly atmospheric fantasy where the horror is not the monsters you face but the ones you create.

After her sister Lasya’s sudden death, Kajal vows to do whatever it takes to bring her back. No cost is too great, even if it means preventing Lasya’s soul from joining the cycle of reincarnation. But as Kajal prepares for the resurrection, her sister’s trapped soul warps into a bhuta—a violent, wraith-like spirit hell-bent on murdering those who wronged it in life. With each kill, the bhuta becomes stronger and fiercer, and Kajal’s chances of resurrecting Lasya with her soul intact grow slimmer.

Blamed for Lasya’s rampage and condemned as a witch, Kajal is locked away with little hope of escape. That is, until two strangers who label themselves rebels arrive and offer to free her. The catch: She must resurrect the kingdom’s fallen crown prince, aiding their coup to overthrow the usurper who sits the throne. Desperate to return to Lasya’s body, Kajal rushes to revive the crown prince . . . only to discover that she’s resurrected another boy entirely.
All her life, Kajal has trusted no one but her sister. But with Lasya dead and rebels ready to turn her over to the usurper’s ruthless soldiers, Kajal is forced to work with the boy she mistakenly revived. Together, they must find the crown prince before the rebels discover her mistake, or the bhuta finally turns its murderous fury on the person truly responsible for Lasya’s death: Kajal.

Um “Frankenstein meets Indian mythology”? Sign me up! I really enjoy reading stories that are based on myths or legends or folktales from around the world. Even though they’re ‘based on’ and they might deviate from the story a lot, it still gives you a glimpse of the tale that so many people will know. Also, love the black and purple on this cover!

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Four Eids and a Funeral by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, Adiba Jaigirdar
ISBN: 1250890136
on 4 June 2024
Goodreads

Ex-best friends, Tiwa and Said, must work together to save their Islamic Center from demolition, in this romantic story of rekindling and rebuilding by award-winning authors Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé & Adiba Jaigirdar!

Let’s get one thing straight: this is a love story.

These days, Said Hossain spends most of his time away at boarding school. But when his favorite hometown librarian Ms. Barnes dies, he must return home to New Crosshaven for her funeral and for the summer. Too bad being home makes it a lot harder to avoid facing his ex-best friend, Tiwa Olatunji, or facing the daunting task of telling his Bangladeshi parents that he would rather be an artist than a doctor.

Tiwa doesn’t understand what made Said start ignoring her, but it’s probably that fancy boarding school of his. Though he’s unexpectedly staying through the summer, she’s determined to take a page from him and pretend he doesn’t exist. Besides, she has more than enough going on, between grieving her broken family and helping her mother throw the upcoming Eid celebration at the Islamic Center—a place that means so much to Tiwa.

But when the Islamic Center accidentally catches fire, it turns out the mayor plans to demolish the center entirely. Things are still tense between the ex-friends but Tiwa needs Said’s help if there’s any hope of changing the mayor’s mind, and Said needs a project to submit to art school (unbeknownst to anyone). Will all their efforts be enough to save the Islamic Center, save Eid, and maybe save their relationship?

Speaking of themes and stories from other cultures other my own, Four Eids and a Funeral sounds both beautiful and sad all at the same time. A classic for Young Adult books, that’s for sure.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Love, Off the Record by Samantha Markum

Goodreads

Wyn is going to beat Three even if it kills her—or, preferably, him. Being freshmen staffers on the university newspaper puts them at the bottom of the pecking order—until a rare reporter spot opens up. Wyn and Three are both determined to get the position, starting a game of sabotage that pushes them to do their worst, from stealing each other’s ideas to playing twisted mind games. No road is too low when it comes to winning.

As Wyn’s search for the perfect story leads her to an anonymous, campus-wide dating app, she hits it off with a mystery man she thinks might be the cute RA from her dorm. But Wyn is all too familiar with being rejected because of her weight, and she’s hesitant to reveal her identity, even as she grows closer with someone who might be the guy of her dreams.

When Three breaks a story that’s closer to home than he or Wyn expects, the two must put aside their differences to expose the truth—and face their real feelings for each other, which threaten everything Wyn has built with her anonymous match.

I mean, I feel like I know the entire story and how it’s going to play out simply by this book description of Love, Off the Record but am I still going to read it when it comes out in June? You betcha.

July 2024 YA Book Releases

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024A Darker Mischief by Derek Milman
ISBN: 1339009935
Published by Scholastic Press
on 2 July 2024
Goodreads

The Honeys meets The Secret History in a work of dark academia like no other -- a boarding school thriller about a queer teen from Mississippi who finds himself swept into a world of old money, privilege, and the secret society at the heart of it all.

When Cal Ware wins a scholarship to an elite New England boarding school, he's thrilled to leave his past behind. Back home in Mississippi, he was the poor, queer kid who never fit in. But at Essex Academy, he'll be able to reinvent himself. Or so he hopes...

But at Essex, Cal's classmates only see his cheap clothes and old iPhone. They mock his accent, and can't believe he's never left the country, or heard of The Hamptons. Cal, at his breaking point, is about to give up and return to Mississippi when he learns about a secret society on campus -- the key to becoming Essex royalty.

Cal knows he's not exactly secret society material, but to his surprise, he finds an unlikely champion in the handsome, charismatic, and slightly dangerous Luke Kim. As they get swept up in the mystery and glamour of the Rush process, Cal finds himself falling in love for the first time.
But as the initiation rituals grow riskier -- and increasingly nefarious -- Cal must decide how far he's willing to go, and how much of himself he's willing to sacrifice, to save everything and everyone he cherishes most. Because nothing at Essex -- not even Cal's first love -- is quite what it seems.

I didn’t know I liked Dark Academia books until I read books like The Atlas Six and Ninth House, and while this one is more YA, I’m looking forward to picking it up in July. I also love a story that’s set in a boarding school, or some sort of elite education institution. Here for it.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Such Charming Liars by Karen M. McManus

Goodreads

For all of Kat’s life, it’s just been her and her mother, Jamie—except for the forty-eight hours when Jamie was married and Kat had a stepbrother, Liam. That all ended in an epic divorce, and Kat and Liam haven’t spoken since.

Now Jamie is a jewel thief trying to go straight, but she has one last job—at billionaire Ross Sutherland’s birthday party. And Kat has figured out a way to tag along. What Kat doesn’t know, though, is that there are two surprise guests at the dazzling Sutherland compound that weekend. The last two people she wants to run into. Liam and his father—a serial scammer who has his sights set on Ross Sutherland’s youngest daughter.

Kat and Liam are on a collision course to disaster, and when a Sutherland dies, they realize they might actually be in the killer’s crosshairs themselves. Somehow Kat and Liam are the new targets, and they can’t trust anyone—except each other.

Or can they? Because if there’s one thing both Kat and Liam know, it’s how to lie. They learned from the best.

I’m a big fan of Karen M. McManus’ books. You can find a heap of reviews here. Now, I don’t love all of them but I will definitely read whatever books she comes out. This once was an immediate add to my TBR.

This emotional debut thriller follows a teen girl being haunted by the ghost of her toxic ex-girlfriend, who gives her a chilling ultimatum—help her possess another girl or go down for her murder.

Maya has always belonged to Alana. Until she finds the courage to break up with Alana while they’re hiking in Southern California.
Then Alana goes missing. As the police get involved and the media run wild with the story, everyone seems to think that Maya is lying about Alana’s disappearance. Secretly, Maya knows they’re if Alana’s dead, she’s the one to blame.

But that’s not Maya’s only secret. Alana isn’t gone, not really—and she isn’t going to let Maya go so easily…

Now, I’m not one to frequent the thriller section of my library, bookstore, or Libby app. But not gonna lie, this one intrigues me. I’ll have to check it out when it is published in July.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Our Wicked Histories by Amy Goldsmith

Pages: 384
Goodreads

A teen girl’s attempt to make amends with her former friend group takes a sinister turn during a weekend getaway at an ancestral Irish estate in this atmospheric, literary horror from the author of Those We Drown.

There’s something in the lake at Wren Hall.

At least, that’s what the locals say. Not that Meg cares much about the rumors. When she’s asked to spend Halloween weekend at the Ireland retreat of the wealthy Wren twins, she recognizes the invitation for exactly what it is: her last, and only, chance to save her spot at Greyscott’s, the exclusive British art school she attended on scholarship until last summer. Clever, beautiful, and talented, the twins are the pride of Greyscott’s, and kindhearted Lottie Wren was once Meg’s closest friend. But not anymore.

None of Meg’s old friend group have talked to her since she left school—and they especially don’t talk about the incident that resulted in her suspension. Now, Meg is willing to do whatever it takes to earn their forgiveness.

But Wren Hall turns out to be far from the idyllic country manor Meg was expecting. The house is damp and drafty, the mirrors are all covered, and the weed-choked lake is at the center of legends that haunt the property to this day—a tainted legacy the estate seems unable to shake.

The truth is, people aren’t the only ones who keep secrets. Places can keep them too—and Wren Hall is drowning in them. When the past bleeds into the present and ancient sins rise to the surface, Meg must ask herself how well she really knows her one-time best friends...or whether any of them will survive the weekend.

And I’m not a big fan or horror either, but I didn’t say I had to enjoy all the books that I’m listing in this roundup of some of the upcoming young adult releases for summer. Yes, I’ve read some. But not many. The draw card for me on this one though? Irish Estate. Very intrigued.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
ISBN: 0316481017
on 30 July 2024
Goodreads

Seven tickets. An island of dreams. The chance of a lifetime.

Welcome to the Grandest Game, an annual competition run by billionaire Avery Grambs and the four infamous Hawthorne brothers, whose family fortune she inherited. Designed to give anyone a shot at fame and fortune, this year’s game requires one of seven golden tickets to enter. With millions on the line, those seven players will do whatever it takes to win.

Some of the players are in it for the money. Some for power. Some for reasons all their own. Every single one of them has secrets. Amidst it all is Grayson Hawthorne, tasked with a vital role in this year’s game. But as tensions rise and the mind-bending challenges push the players to their limits—physically, mentally, and emotionally—it soon becomes clear that not everyone is playing by the rules.

Hello Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Your Inheritance Games series is a favourite of mine, and in 2024 I also read The Brothers Hawthorne and loved it. I cannot wait for this book in July! And this is the first in a new series, which has the same characters but also new ones, too. Super looking forward to it. Also, the covers on these books are top-notch.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Asking for a Friend by Kara H.L. Chen
ISBN: 0063237881
Goodreads

This charming YA rom-com follows a strong-willed, ambitious teen as she teams up with her childhood frenemy to start a dating-advice column, perfect for fans of Emma Lord and Gloria Chao.

Juliana Zhao is absolutely certain of a few things:
1. She is the world’s foremost expert on love.
2. She is going to win the nationally renowned Asian Americans in Business Competition.

When Juliana is unceremoniously dropped by her partner and she’s forced to pair with her nonconformist and annoying frenemy, Garrett Tsai, everything seems less clear. Their joint dating advice column must be good enough to win and secure bragging rights within her small Taiwanese American community, where her family’s reputation has been in the pits since her older sister was disowned a few years prior. Juliana always thought prestige mattered above all else. But as she argues with Garrett over how to best solve everyone else’s love problems and faces failure for the first time, she starts to see fractures in this privileged, sheltered worldview. With the competition heating up, Juliana must reckon with the sacrifices she’s made to be a perfect daughter—and whether winning is something she even wants anymore.

I haven’t read a good YA rom-com in a while, and this one sounds super cute. It sounds like a frememies-to-lovers situation, and I’m ready for all the teenage drama.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024The Girl With No Reflection by Keshe Chow

Goodreads

Princess Ying Yue believed in love...once upon a time.

Yet when she’s chosen to wed the crown prince, Ying’s dreams of a fairy tale marriage quickly fall apart. Her husband-to-be is cold and indifferent, confining Ying to her room for reasons he won’t explain. Worse still are the rumors that swirl around the imperial whispers of seven other royal brides who, after their own weddings, mysteriously disappeared.

Left alone with only her own reflection for company, Ying begins to see things. Strange things. Movements in the corners of her mirror. Colorful lights upon its surface. And when, on the eve of her wedding, she unwittingly tears open a gateway, she is pulled into a mirror world.

This realm is full of sentient reflections, including the enigmatic Mirror Prince. Unlike his real-world counterpart, the Mirror Prince is kind and compassionate, and before long Ying falls in love—the kind of love she always dreamed of.

But there is darkness in this new world, too.

It turns out the two worlds have a long and blood-soaked history, and Ying has a part to play in the future of them both. And the brides who came before Ying? By the time they discovered what their role was, it was already too late.

There is so much going on in this book description that I don’t know what to comment on. The YA, the fantasy, the Asia setting, the fact that it gives me strong Mulan vibes (queue “Reflection” song), or that you know things are going to go DOWN in this book … here for it.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Under the Surface by Diana Urban

An epic survival-thriller about four teens who get lost in the Paris catacombs for days—a gripping and propulsive story of love, danger, betrayal, and hope… even when all seems lost.

Ruby is terrified to cave to her feelings for Sean and risk him crushing her heart.

Sean is pumped to spend a week with Ruby in Paris on their senior class trip, and he’ll wait however long until she’s ready to take things further.

But when Ruby’s best friend sneaks out the first night to meet a mysterious French boy, Ruby goes after her with two classmates, but caves to another temptation: attending mystery boy’s exclusive party in the Paris catacombs, the intricate web of tunnels beneath the city, home to six million long-dead Parisians. Only they never reach the party.

Underground, as something sinister chases them, they get lost in the endless maze of bones, uncovering dark secrets about the catacombs… and each other. And if they can’t find a way out, they’ll die in the dark beneath the City of Light.

Aboveground, Sean races to find the girl he loves as a media frenzy over the four missing teens begins.

A party in Paris’ catacombs sounds like the last place I’d want to be, and death doesn’t freak me out. Underground and death? Mmm no thank you. I’ll just stay home in bed and not attend that one. But thankfully I don’t have to be in the story, I can just read it. This one comes out in August.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Better Left Buried by Mary E. Roach
ISBN: 1368098401
on 6 August 2024
Goodreads

Lucy Preston just wants to go on vacation. The beach-swimsuit-sleeping-in kind. Not the impromptu stop in a creepy small town at the edge of the forest kind.

But being the daughter of a famous private detective means that sometimes, your beach vacay goes off the rails a bit. Because the first thing Lucy’s mom does? Takes her to the abandoned amusement park for a clandestine meeting—except instead of a meeting, they find a body.

Because of course they do.
As Lucy’s mom is swept into top-secret private-detective stuff, Lucy sets out on her own to investigate her mom’s mysterious connection with this town. Lucy’s snooping sets her on a collision course with Audrey Nelson, the mysterious girl on the motorcycle who Lucy could swear she saw near the amusement park the night the body was found.

If Lucy and Audrey can’t work together to uncover secrets that go back generations, there will likely be another body found at the base of the old vine-covered roller coaster outside of town. And this time it might just be Lucy’s.

We’re really mixing up the themes and storylines in this list, which is fantastic. This one is about ‘top-secret private-detective stuff’ and girls on motorbikes. And that’s enough for me to pick it up.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Witty in Pink by Erica George
ISBN: 1649375417
Goodreads

This summer, Blythe Rowley is living her best bougie life in the country–until her former nemesis shows up to ruin it. Now it’s become a season of scandal, complete with nonstop banter, a swarm of bees, and worst of all, love…in this delightfully mischievous Regency romcom with a modern twist that’s perfect for fans of Bridgerton and The Hating Game.

We don’t have a lot to go on for Witty in Pink just yet, but you know I’m here for a ‘delightfully mischievous Regency romcom’. I’ll be looking out for a longer description in the coming months.

15 Young Adult Book Releases for Summer 2024Death at Morning House by Maureen Johnson
ISBN: 0063255952
on 6 August 2024
Goodreads

From the bestselling author of the Truly Devious books, Maureen Johnson, comes a new stand-alone YA about a teen who uncovers a mystery while working as a tour guide on an island and must solve it before history repeats itself.

The fire wasn’t Marlowe Wexler’s fault. Dates should be hot, but not hot enough to warrant literal firefighters. Akilah, the girl Marlowe has been in love with for years, will never go out with her again. No one dates an accidental arsonist.

With her house-sitting career up in flames, it seems the universe owes Marlowe a new summer job, and that’s how she ends up at Morning House, a mansion built on an island in the 1920s and abandoned shortly thereafter. It’s easy enough, giving tours. Low risk of fire. High chance of getting bored talking about stained glass and nut cutlets and Prohibition.

Oh, and the deaths. Did anyone mention the deaths?

Maureen Johnson is one of my favourite young adult authors, for sure. Her Truly Devious series is another favourite of mine, and I didn’t even realise she had a book coming out in 2024 until putting together this list. So looking forward to reading this one!

Eep! What a lineup of young adult book releases for this (Northern Hemisphere) summer! Check out a longer list here on Goodreads. So I wanna know – which of these book releases are you looking forward to the most? Or perhaps there are a couple? Let me know in the comments!
