How to spend 2 days in Hong Kong. Travelling with This Splendid Shambles.

After 10 days in Mongolia, we set off for Hong Kong.

To get to Ulaanbaatar from New Zealand, you can fly Auckland to Beijing, Seoul or Hong Kong. We opted for Hong Kong this trip, mainly so we could visit friends and have a bit of a catch up. Our flight was at some horrific hour in the morning (I think it left at 6am, so we had to be there at 4am, so our ride picked us up at 3.30am and I woke up at 3am), so it was only mid-morning by the time we landed.

An airport shuttle and a local bus later, we arrived at our friend’s place in Sha Tin. After we unpacked a little, we still had a good chunk of afternoon left, so off we went on our first adventure in Hong Kong. We headed for the Metro system and hopped on a train to Nathan Road, one of the main thoroughfares and shopping streets in the city. We discovered a bunch load of statues set up for kids in one of the parks, and they were an entertaining surprise.

The next day we spent over on Macau, but the last day we were in Hong Kong we didn’t do too much. A slow morning, with a trip into Sha Tin central to wander around the markets and the shops (and buying bubble tea, because when in Hong Kong), and enjoyed some dim sum as well. Out flight was in the early evening, so we headed back on our way around 3pm, back on the bus to the Airport shuttle.

While it was a short visit to Hong Kong, it was an enjoyable one. There’s a bunch of things I’d love to check out (including the Hong Kong Disneyland), but that really calls for at least a week’s holiday there.

The flight back to Auckland was 1.5 hours shorter than on the way, so we arrived home about 8am on Sunday morning. I hadn’t slept on the plane at all, and my attempt at a nap when I got home failed epically. By the time I fell into bed at around 9.30pm that night (trying my hardest to get back into a ‘normal’ pattern), I had been awake for around 36 hours. Would not recommend.
