Brother’s Grimm Fairy Tales

No bookshelf would be complete without this household classic! The fairy tales within this book have shaped minds and imagination for many generations, and they are just as exciting to read as an adult! I think it’s so important to pass down to the next generation these classic stories that continue to mold young minds today.

Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne

Every time I dive into the picturesque beauty of the Hundred Acre Woods, I’m lost in a quaint, safe little world. The art style in this book brings me back to simpler times and I can’t wait to share these tales with my daughter!

Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter

The illustrations and stories of Beatrix Potter are a joy to look at and read. They truly do transport you to the English countryside. Grab a cup of tea and enjoy these tales with your little ones!

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol

I loved this story to the point of obsession when I was a kid. In fact, my daughter’s first birthday was themed after Alice in Wonderland! The oddities within this book push the boundaries of reason and inspire me to believe in nine impossible things before breakfast.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

This charming story is about a rather spoiled nine-year-old girl who experiences real tragedy and growth as her life is turned upside down. It’s a great way to introduce young children to healing from heartache and illness through the whimsy and wonder of the secret garden.

The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald

The Princess and the Goblin is a Victorian-era tale about eight-year-old Princess Irene who one day encounters goblins while out exploring the forest and is saved by a young miner boy named Curdie. Little do they know that the goblins, who live underground, are planning a war against the humans! The Princess and her new friend Curdie must do whatever it takes to stop them.

A tale of goodness and adventure, it appeals to boys and girls alike, and is as engaging for adults as it is for children.

Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairy Journal by Cicely Mary Barker

Extracted from Cicely Mary Barker’s journal during the summer of 1920 and accompanied by the sweet and ethereal drawings of her signature flower fairies, Fairyopolis is an absolute delight to read. It’s assembled like a scrapbook and features interactive elements within the book that will surely transport you to the secret world of the flower fairies. This was one of my favorite books growing up and it is certain to be a big hit for any little girl fascinated with fairies.

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Reading this book is equivalent to snuggling up in a blanket with a cup of warm cocoa. Its gentle heroine, Sarah, faces injustice and heartache with the strength of a soldier. Her ability to always look through rose-colored glasses even when she is so badly mistreated conveys a very important lesson to young girls that kindness and love truly do conquer in the end.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Journey through Narnia alongside Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy as they discover the magical world through the wardrobe. These are definitely favorites for both boys and girls and are classics for any household.

E.T.A. Hofmann’s The Nutcracker and Mouse King: The Graphic Novel (Illustrated and Adapted by Natalie Andrewson)

This illustrated rendition of E.T.A. Hofmann’s classic work The Nutcracker and the Mouse King will take you to a magical Christmas realm complete with a nine-headed mouse king, a brave heroine named Marie, and a dashing nutcracker.

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

Who didn’t dream of flying off to Neverland as a kid? I definitely entertained fantasies of Peter Pan appearing through my bedroom window and taking me and my brothers to the second star on the right to fight off pirates and swim with mermaids. Peter Pan is bound to enchant no matter your age!

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle

A great option especially for young boys, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood recount the tales of swashbuckling rouges who steal from the rich to feed the poor and fight off villains of all kinds. You can’t go wrong when you dive into the life of this dashing archer.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

When orphan Anne Shirley is sent to Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert by mistake, she is welcomed with open arms. Her experiences at school and her relationships with new friends are still relatable today and share the importance of family and community with young readers.

Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers

Look out for the east wind! The stern, proper, vain, and magical nanny that everyone loves comes to visit the Banks children one day and turns their lives upside down. The book version of Mary Poppins is quite different from the Disney adaptation, but enchanting nonetheless!

Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans

The simple yet beautiful illustrations of the Madeline books are sure to delight. They are classics for young readers and bring back fond and happy memories for older ones!
