5 books to read

There are many books I hope to read this summer.

But for time’s sake, I’ve narrowed it down to five. Well, technically 10, as I included 5 sequels I hope to read this summer in another post. There are obviously more than this on my TBR list (it’s never ending, after all), but some that I have either had for a while and need to be read, or ones that I’ve recently acquired and can’t wait to get into.

Some of these books I hope will be the first in my 2018 Goodreads challenge, one I might even finish by the end of the year. We’ll see how it goes. “Summer” in this context is really December to February, so check back in at the end of Feb next year to see how I’ve done, or follow along on Goodreads.

Here are 5 books I hope to read the summer:

In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries.

No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever.
But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself.

I’ve just received this title from Hachette Publishing, and can’t wait to get into it. It’s released on December 27th, so make sure you grab a copy!

From an impressive sisterhood of YA writers comes an edge-of-your-seat anthology of historical fiction and fantasy featuring a diverse array of daring heroines.

Criss-cross America — on dogsleds and ships, stagecoaches and trains — from pirate ships off the coast of the Carolinas to the peace, love, and protests of 1960s Chicago.

Join fifteen of today’s most talented writers of young adult literature on a thrill ride through history with American girls charting their own course. They are monsters and mediums, bodyguards and barkeeps, screenwriters and schoolteachers, heiresses and hobos. They're making their own way in often-hostile lands, using every weapon in their arsenals, facing down murderers and marriage proposals. And they all have a story to tell.

Picked this up from the Book Depository a few weeks back, and I’m really looking forward to it. Sounds like an awesome collection of stories.

5 Books I Hope To Read This Summer | 2017 – 2018Warcross by Marie Lu

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

In a moment of weakness I purchased Warcross in a “buy one get one half price’ sale that Paper Plus were having. I shouldn’t be allowed in there. It was also the prize for one of the Christmas giveaways this year. Looking forward to actually picking it up!

5 Books I Hope To Read This Summer | 2017 – 2018Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

It all begins with a fugitive billionaire and the promise of a cash reward.

Turtles All the Way Down is about lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, Star Wars fan fiction, and tuatara. But at its heart is Aza Holmes, a young woman navigating daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

In his long-awaited return, John Green shares Aza's story with shattering, unflinching clarity.

I bought Turtles All the Way Down the day after it was released. And yet here we are, months later and I still haven’t read it. That’s ridiculous. I must read this book. Stat.
