We took a day trip to Astoria, Oregon

If you’re a fan of the Goonies, then you’ll be familiar with Astoria, Oregon. It wasn’t the reason I visited the little town in the northeast, but it definitely added to the experience.

The day following our fantastic Seattle outing under blue skies came a day of low grey cloud, complete with a near-constant drizzle. Normally this would be fine and we’d get on with life. Except that it occurred on the day we were road-tripping from Seattle down to Cannon Beach, via Astoria.

I had heard a lot about Astoria and how neat of a town it was. Alas, the image I had of the place was coated in a monochrome collection of greys which dulled the colourful townhouses and obscured views of the ocean. But it wasn’t all bad. Not by a long shot.

We drove over the famous flat bridge, and had lunch down on the waterfront, with a seal floating around in the water below, the pilot boats coming and going. While I’m not a big fan of the beach, I could spend hours looking at or being on the water. And the gloomy day made it seem all the morning soothing for some reason.

After a quick visit to the Goonie’s house (which had a huge sign saying ‘don’t come near, don’t walk to the house, don’t take photos or we’ll call the police’ – we didn’t linger), we drove over the hills to look at the pretty homes before wandering around the streets.

There were so many really fun shops in Astoria Oregon, and we definitely spent a lot of money. 🙈 Good thing we’re supporting local businesses. The highlight shop was one called Finware, and it was full of things from Scandinavia. Being of Norwegian descent, it was such a fun shop to browse through.

You might be wondering about the witch on the power pole… but we were visiting Astoria in October, so Halloween was out in full blast. On the power poles around the town, down the main street, were witches who looked like they had crashed into the pole. I thought this was so clever! Top marks to whoever thought this up.

While it wasn’t the visit I had hoped or envisioned due to the cloud coverage, it was super neat to see the Goonie’s house, check out the shops, and see hilarious witches on broomsticks. I would definitely go back to visit again if I’m ever in that neck of the woods.
