Gingerbread houses are tradition in my family.

It started one year when my grandma decided to give it a go (I would have been around 10 years old, perhaps). From that Christmas on, it became the norm; my grandma would make a simple gingerbread house, just four walls and roof, which she would then smother in lollies (sweets). Then us grandchildren (there would have been about 11 at the time, the number eventually grew to 15) would simply dig in, usually late afternoon on Christmas day or on Boxing Day, depending on our past sugar intake for the day.

As we grew older, stopped gathering every single year for Christmas like we did when we were kids, or our families moved around the globe, the tradition ceased. That was until one year I decided that just because we weren’t gathering as an extended family for Christmas didn’t mean that we couldn’t have the gingerbread house. And so I took up the baton, and now every year I make a gingerbread house. Some years it’s the same as my grandma’s one – simple with sweets on it – other years it’s a little village so our guests can take home a mini gingerbread house each, and more recently I’ve really branched out and created whole large buildings.

What will I create this year? I’m not 100% sure yet but I will make one all the same, continuing on the tradition my grandma started all those years ago.
