New young adult book releases autumn 2024, with a woman in a cosy jumper holding a cup of coffee, a blanket on her knee, with a book open.

While here in New Zealand the spring will be on its way soon, there’s nothing quite like a ya fall book release. Like every year, there are so many great books coming out this autumn, and I can’t wait to read some of them. In this post, we’re going to take a look at 22 young adult book releases for autumn, from the months of September through to November.

Definitely add these ones to your TBR lists, or your Goodreads shelves, or if you have StoryGraph, add them there, too! And just a note that these aren’t ALL the books coming out in autumn 2024, they’re just some of the ones that I’ve noted. Check out this Goodreads list here for an updated list.

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024Accidental Demons by Clare Edge
ISBN: 1335006974
on 17 September 2024
Genres: Young Adult
Goodreads

Conjuring demons seems like something you should totally not be able to do by accident, right? Well, normally it isn’t. But Bernadette Crowley is the perfect storm of magical accidents.

For the youngest in a long line of witches, demons used to be no big deal. A spell and a quick prick of the finger, and a witch like Ber could summon a demon to do anything she needed—clean a mess, send a message, you name it.
But that was before Ber was diagnosed with diabetes. Now each time she tests her blood sugar, accidental demons are slipping into the human dimension…and causing absolute chaos.

Good thing Ber and her older sister, Maeve, know that every magical problem has a magical solution. They’ll just conjure a low-order demon to monitor her blood sugar! Bonus: they only have to bend one or two teeny, tiny rules. But before they know it, they’ve stumbled into deeper, more mysterious magic than they ever could have predicted. And soon it’s not just Ber’s magic but her entire coven that’s in danger.

This sounds like such an interesting take on young adult fantasy! It sounds like a really fun, quirky book, with also diabetes representation. It’ll be interesting to see how a few real-world struggles slot into a witchy-demon story like this one. Looking forward to checking it out!

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024Us in Ruins by Rachel Moore

Margot is on the quest to uncover and reassemble an ancient—and cursed—vase, with the help of a boy who went missing in 1932, because it's the only way to put back together her broken heart in this stand-alone adventure rom-com, perfect for fans of What the River Knows and The Lost City.

The mythical Vase of Venus Aurelia hasn’t been seen since 1932, but Margot Rhodes is determined to change that.

Drawn by the vase’s supposed magical properties, Margot embarks on her school’s archaeological trip to Pompeii. Sure, it’s her first time holding a shovel, but she’s got something no one else does: lost teenage explorer Van Keane’s journal.
Poring over the poetic entries that serve as a map to the vase’s missing shards, Margot finds herself falling in love with the boy who wrote it a century ago. She’s shocked when her search leads her to a statue that looks exactly like Van, and then the statue comes to life.

Catapulted into the present, Van is nothing like the wordsmith Margot imagined. He’s all sharp edges, intent on retrieving the relic for all the wrong reasons. But it takes two to survive Venus’s death-defying challenges, and, together, Margot and Van must excavate the treasure—and their buried pasts—before their story ends in ruins.

Mythical lost cities? Magic? School trips to Europe?! A bit of time travel?! Sign me the heck up right now.

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024Where Shadows Meet by Patrice Caldwell
ISBN: 1250815355
on 1 April 2025
Genres: Young Adult
Goodreads

The dark and thrillingly romantic debut vampire fantasy that questions what it truly means to sacrifice for love.
You have no idea what I’ve done for love. Just as you have no idea what you may one day do.

Once long ago, a girl named Favre sacrificed her wings for love. Thana, the young goddess she so willingly gave them up for, sacrificed that same love for power. But everything has a cost.

Favre never got over the loss of her wings. And Thana’s choices led to a life of eternal night, and later, their destruction. Favre has bided her time ever since, waiting for the chance to resurrect the girl she loves who turned her into the creature she hates.
Now, a thousand years later, Leyla, the crown princess of the malichora—an ancient race that survives on human blood —must travel to the Island of the Dead when her best friend is captured during an attack on her nation’s capital.

Along with Najja, a fierce, beautiful seer, and the last person she expected to help her, Leyla forges down a dangerous path, intent on saving her friend. But nothing is as it seems. The closer she gets to her goal, the more she risks awakening an ancient evil and destroying everything she holds dear.

Vampires are definitely back in fashion, and Where Shadows Meet by Patrice Caldwell sounds like it’s going to be a part-vampire, part-quest book, with lots of action and heartbreak.

Ana Maria Ybarra dreams of becoming a world-famous pastry chef, but dreams have a cost. Her family can barely keep the family business running, let alone pay for culinary school.

Ana Maria's only hope is winning a recipe competition, which has a grand prize big enough to pay for culinary school. But then the ultimate distraction shows up in her small town: Miguel, a boy she spent one magical day with six months ago, and who she never thought she'd see again. Ana Maria thinks maybe fate has brought them together again for a reason-- until she learns the horrible truth that Miguel is a Morales.

A Ybarra cannot be associated with a Morales-let alone fall for one. But when Miguel offers to help Ana Maria with the competition, she is so desperate to win she can't turn him down. All she needs to do is keep Miguel at arm's length and keep their deal a secret from their families. After all, teaming up with Miguel is just business, nothing more…right?

How cute is that cover?! Changing gears here from the book above, but Guava and Grudges by Alexis Castellanos (I do love alliteration in book titles!) is giving me Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee vibes and I’m here for it.

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024To the Bone by Alena Bruzas
ISBN: 0593616200
on 10 September 2024
Genres: Horror, Young Adult
Goodreads

It’s 1609 at James Fort, and Ellis has recently arrived from England with Henry Collins and his wife, who she serves as their indentured help. To orphaned Ellis, James Fort is an opportunity – a fresh start in a new world. And now that she has fallen for the bold and glorious Jane Eddowes, she feels even more hopeful about her future.

Foolishly hopeful, for soon she comes to understand the horrible realities of her home: the crimes that her fellow settlers have committed against the Native Americans there, the terrible shortage of food they are facing as winter draws near, and the cruelty of her employer, both to her and to his pregnant wife. Ellis will call upon all her fortitude, but will it be enough? Gripping, shocking, and exquisitely told, this is crucial U.S. history seen through the eyes of an extraordinary fictional teenager.

I’m not usually one for horror, although I have read a few young adult horrors and managed to make it through mostly unharmed. To the Bone by Alena Bruzas is more of a historical, LGBTQ+ horror, it seems, and the additional line not included here but can be found on the Goodreads listing says “This moving and tragic love story is also a starkly honest look at Colonial America, set during the “Starving Time” in Jamestown”.

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024Repeat After Me by Jessica Warman
ISBN: 1649374801
Genres: Young Adult
Goodreads

He’s about to have a serious temporal tantrum.

In retrospect, I probably should have passed on the ceviche.

It was already a weird Friday. My class is stuck on an eerily remote island for our senior trip, I’m pretty sure Mr. D (“call me Max”) is hiding something from us, my ex–best friend turned nemesis keeps stealing my candy, and tonight’s plan for my boyfriend and me to finally lose our virginity to each other is going hellishly.

I mean, ceviche is delicious, don’t get me wrong. But a dish made from a supposedly immortal octopus should really come with a warning label. Consuming a telepathic sea creature of unknown origin may result in immortality, no consequences to any actions, and getting stuck in a time loop for all of eternity.

Now every morning I wake up, and it’s the same Friday all over again. Same annoying classmates. Same island suspended in time by an evil oyster farmer with a god complex. Same outrageous candy theft. The only person I can count on to keep me from losing my grip on this new reality is Louis, my best friend who knows me better than anyone else in this world.

This should be a cephalopod-induced nightmare but somehow—in some ridiculous way—I feel like I’m experiencing the extraordinary, the gift of endless opportunities to get things right. But when I wake up every morning and it’s Friday again, sometimes it feels more like a never-ending prison sentence.

They say some things are worse than death … guess I’m about to find out.

This is a great book cover! I love the blue and the pink, and the octopus around the clock – very, very cool. The concept of this story, based on the description there, seems wildly strange. And I’m kinda here for it? Interested to see what the book is like!

October 2024 YA Book Releases

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024The Unfinished by Cheryl Isaacs
ISBN: 0063287382
on 15 October 2024
Genres: Horror, Young Adult
Goodreads

Small-town athlete Avery is haunted by the black water and Unfinished beings of Kanyen’kehá:ka stories and must turn to the culture she hasn’t felt connected to in order to save her town.
The black water has been waiting. Watching. Hungry for the souls it needs to survive.

When small-town athlete Avery’s morning run leads her to a strange pond in the middle of the forest, she awakens a horror the townspeople of Crook’s Falls have long forgotten.

Avery can smell the water, see it flooding everywhere; she thinks she’s losing her mind. And as the black water haunts Avery—taking a new form each time—people in town begin to go missing.

Though Avery had heard whispers of monsters from her Kanyen’kehá:ka (Mohawk) relatives, she’s never really connected to her Indigenous culture or understood the stories. But the Elders she has distanced herself from now may have the answers she needs.
When Key, her best friend and longtime crush, is the next to disappear, Avery is faced with a choice: listen to the Kanyen’kehá:ka and save the town but lose her friend forever…or listen to her heart and risk everything to get Key back.

As we head into October, more horror and Halloween-esque books start to come out (classic of the time of year, that’s for sure!), and The Unfinished by Cheryl Isaacs both looks and sounds terrifying. Especially because we had a lot of flooding here in New Zealand in 2023 … perhaps I won’t be picking this one up, but if it sounds like you and you end up reading, do let me know what it’s like!

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024The Dividing Sky by Jill Tew

Liv is a Proxy, a member of the lower class who lives to enrich the lives of others. She's supposed to use the neurochip in her brain to give her workaholic clients memories of experiences they've never had, so they can stay productive. And yeah, maybe she also deals a few happy memories illegally on the side, to her fellow lower class citizens who need a reason to keep going. She makes an extra buck, and it's harmless, right?

Rookie enforcer Adrian doesn't think so. He doggedly tracks Liv to the woods on the Metro's outskirts, only to find that she's wiped all memories of who she is, what she's done, and how much she should hate someone in his uniform.
It was supposed to be simple: find the perpetrator, bring her in. But if Liv can’t remember anything, is she truly guilty? And is the law Adrian's pledged his life to defend truly in the best interest of all? Turns out justice looks a little different in the woods’ golden light.

Okay, tell me dystopian books are coming back?? I think I’m well over due to dive into a dystopian story again, and this one sounds like one, for sure. Looking forward to this one!

I do love a djinn story! Especially one that also has prisons, revenge, and drama! Let’s go!

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024Don't Let the Forest In by C.G. Drews
ISBN: 1250895669

Genres: Young Adult
Goodreads

Once upon a time, Andrew had cut out his heart and given it to this boy, and he was very sure Thomas had no idea that Andrew would do anything for him. Protect him. Lie for him. Kill for him.

High school senior Andrew Perrault finds refuge in the twisted fairytales that he writes for the only person who can ground him to reality—Thomas Rye, the boy with perpetually ink-stained hands and hair like autumn leaves. And with his twin sister, Dove, inexplicably keeping him at a cold distance upon their return to Wickwood Academy, Andrew finds himself leaning on his friend even more.

But something strange is going on with Thomas. His abusive parents have mysteriously vanished, and he arrives at school with blood on his sleeve. Thomas won’t say a word about it, and shuts down whenever Andrew tries to ask him questions. Stranger still, Thomas is haunted by something, and he seems to have lost interest in his artwork—whimsically macabre sketches of the monsters from Andrew’s wicked stories.

Desperate to figure out what’s wrong with his friend, Andrew follows Thomas into the off-limits forest one night and catches him fighting a nightmarish monster—Thomas’s drawings have come to life and are killing anyone close to him. To make sure no one else dies, the boys battle the monsters every night. But as their obsession with each other grows stronger, so do the monsters, and Andrew begins to fear that the only way to stop the creatures might be to destroy their creator…

If the book cover is anything to go by, Don’t Let the Forest In by C.G. Drews is a scary read. Haha. But the blurb has got me hooked, that’s for sure! Can’t wait to dive into this one!

Arden and her best friends Maddy, Remi, and Shane, each have different reasons for wanting to throw the party to end all parties. But when the manor doors bar everyone inside and the walls begin to bleed, all anyone wants to do is make it out alive.

Again with a horror-y book, but I love a manor. Despite the bleeding walls, I’ll probably give Killer House Party by Lily Anderson a go!

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024Three Things About Emmy Crawford by Allison L. Bitz
ISBN: 006326675X
on 1 October 2024
Genres: Young Adult
Goodreads

Crohn’s disease, the paparazzi, and heartbreak can't derail Emmy Crawford, the type-A daughter of a senator, from relentlessly pursuing her dreams in this coming-of-age novel perfect for fans of Lynn Painter and Rachel Lynn Solomon.

There are three things high school senior Emmy Crawford will accomplish, no matter what:
Taking nationals in debate this season.
Shielding her sister Issy from anything that could hurt her, especially her anxiety.
Representing her family well, since her mom may be the next president.

And nothing can get in Emmy's way. Not Crohn’s disease, even if her gut has been acting up. Not the paparazzi, who snap any photos they can get of the daughters of a presidential candidate. And definitely not her feelings for Gabe Castillo, the only debater in DC who stands a chance at beating her—and who she used to be on secret kissing terms with, before he ghosted.

When Gabe unexpectedly returns to the debate scene and Issy starts crushing on him, Emmy works harder than ever to keep her eyes on winning and off her aching heart and body, because the alternative means losing the three things that matter most.

Another very sweet cover on Three Things About Emmy Crawford by Allison L. Bitz! This one is giving me a mix of Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston meets Yes, No, Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed. I don’t know if it’s anything like those books, but that’s the vibe I’m getting from the blurb.

Anisa Shirani is…well, perfect. A fact, not an opinion. Of course, it’s all a front to feed her own praise-obsessed ego. Behind closed doors, she is—some might say—a little slobbish and snobbish, and she works obsessively to maintain her God-given talents. Fate has favored her, but Ani knows better than anyone that fate is made by effort.

But she must, especially when all signs point to her being a top-notch lawyer with a top-notch education and being destined to marry Isaac, total heartthrob and eldest son of the richest family in the community. A perfect girl deserves a perfect life, and Ani’s perfect life is going exactly the way it should…

Until Ani’s parents announce they’re getting divorced.

Until Isaac shows all the signs of…cheating. Sort of.

Until she starts catching feelings for Marlow, an overly friendly weirdo she’s hated since the moment she laid eyes on him in class.

How can fate be so wrong?

Stop it with these cute book covers! The crocs though … 🤮 This one sounds like a sweet rom-com that I’ll definitely be picking up.

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024The Judgment of Yoyo Gold by Isaac Blum
ISBN: 059352585X
on 15 October 2024
Genres: Young Adult
Goodreads

Yoyo Gold has always played the role of the perfect Jewish daughter. She keeps kosher, looks after her siblings, and volunteers at the local food bank. She respects the decisions of her rabbi father and encourages her friends to observe the rules of their Orthodox faith. But when she sees her best friend cast out of the community over a seemingly innocent transgression, Yoyo’s eyes are opened to the truth of her neighbors’ hypocrisies for the first time. And what she sees leaves her shocked and unmoored.

As Yoyo’s frustration builds, so does the pressure to speak out, even if she can only do so anonymously on TikTok, an app that’s always been forbidden to her. But when one of her videos goes viral—and her decisions wind up impacting not only her own life but also her relationship with the boy she’s falling for—Yoyo’s world is thrown into chaos. She is forced to choose which path to take, for her community, for her family, and most importantly, for herself.

Oooh this sounds like a hard-hitting book. Religion, family, social media – a melting pot for a lot of deep conversations, potential drama and forging your own path. Will be an interesting read, for sure!

Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he's everyone's favorite guy and a total charmer, swanning around like he owns the place. And from the moment they meet again, he rubs Anna up the wrong way.

As the summer and the internship wane on, Lloyd seems to be finding any excuse to annoy Anna, and she's not afraid to give it right back to him. But when a lot of late night working brings them unexpectedly closer, she begins to wonder if there's more to him than she originally thought..

I must have just found all the cute covers for October. It’s either cute covers or horror … but Love & Lattes by Beth Reekles sounds like your classic summer-fling-gone-wrong (or right?) sort of book. As the southern hemisphere moves towards summer, this release is perfect timing.

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024Thanks for Listening by Molly Horan
ISBN: 0063318423
Genres: Young Adult
Goodreads

Mia knows what she’s talking about.

Class schedules, significant others, existential life crises—you name it, she’s talked someone through it.

The problem? No one actually takes her advice.

So when her latest round of (very sensible!) guidance is ignored, resulting in a class flyer stapled to her best friend’s arm and her brother going steady with a girl he doesn’t have feelings for, Mia is done talking. Instead, she creates HereToHelp, an anonymous account to give advice. If her friends don’t know it’s her behind the account, maybe they’ll finally listen for once.

Throw in the girl of her dreams, a plethora of sound (and not-so-sound) advice, and a couple of best friends who seem to have a lot more to hide than Mia knows…and Mia could use some advice of her own to make it through this senior year.

Oh I do enjoy an anonymous column writing book! Thanks for Listening by Molly Horan sounds like a really fun young adult book.

Young Adult Book Releases for Autumn 2024It's Not Me, It's You by Alex Light
ISBN: 0063334062
Goodreads

Jackie Myers is a fraud. Or she might be a genius—the jury’s still out.

The thing is, she secretly runs pleasebreakmyheart, a gone-viral account aimed at breaking hearts and ending relationships…. And she just used it to break up her insufferable eternal nemesis's picture-perfect relationship.

Wilson is the buttoned-up, type A assistant manager of her nightmares—but it turns out he’s also, apparently, a really great boyfriend.

So with her conscience (and paycheck) on the line, Jackie decides there’s only one thing to do: She’s going to help Wilson win his ex-girlfriend back. Which should be easy, considering Jackie hates him…right?

Okay I read Alex Light’s The Upside of Falling and quite enjoyed it. This seems like it’ll be similar in style, but the storyline is a different trope, to be sure.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that London’s first female solicitor in possession of the details of a deadly crime, must be in want of a suspect.

The tenacious Lizzie Bennet has earned her place at Longbourn, her father’s law firm. Her work keeps her busy, but luckily she often has help from (and steals occasional kisses with) Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, a stern but secretly soft-hearted solicitor at Pemberley.

But when the case leads her to the sitting room of a woman Darcy once proposed marriage to, the delicate balance between personal and professional in their relationship is threatened.
