5 Board Games I Love - This Splendid Shambles

I don’t know how I came to love board games so much .

My family has never really been a board game family. No one else really likes playing them. When I used to try and play Monopoly with my sister (3.5 years younger than me) she would get angry when she wasn’t winning and just get up and leave. Not the best person to play with. Perhaps, now that I really think about it, it must be due to the fact that my second home was my best friend’s house. The hours I spent around there growing up are too numerous to mention (or to try to calculate!), and because they were/are a board game family, we always played something when I was there.

More often than not it was the Harry Potter Cluedo, or Sorry, and eventually, when we got a little older, Scrabble. All the girls in that family (there are three sisters, and of course, their mum) love Scrabble and are so good at it. I think in all the years of playing Scrabble with them, I’ve won once. Once! So sad. Anyway! Games. They were a happening thing there. As I’ve grown up, my love of games as only increased, and while my family still won’t really play with me (sometimes my little sister…she’s getting older now so she can play more than just Snap), I love going round to other people’s houses and playing.

After one such afternoon of board games (we played for about 7 hours), I was thinking about my favourite games, and thought I’d share them with you. Some of them aren’t board games, but are fun all the same.

Settlers of Catan

My first memory of this game was only in 2007. I was at a youth camp, and one evening I saw some people playing it, but all I remembered about it was that there were hexagons and small houses. Then at the beginning of this year, when I was home in NZ, a friend brought it round and we played it. I was hooked. Then we were at a bach (like a holiday home) and I taught my Dad and little sister to play it…and then I persuaded Mum to buy it for Dad for his birthday. Fabulous plotting on my part, I thought. Since then, we’ve played quite a bit, and I recently bought the dice version which is great because it’s fast and easy.

Carcassonne

On Boxing Day of 2012, we had some friends over in England, and they brought with them this game. They had got it for Christmas, and hadn’t played it yet. We figured it out together, and it was awesome. I then bought it on my Kindle and played it way too much. A sale on Amazon got me to buying the actual game, and an expansion pack. I’ve played it a lot since then. It’s a great, easy game. You don’t have to have any strategy really, you just choose an upside-down tile, place it, pop a little man on it. Get points. Easy as, but a lot of fun.

Scrabble

While I can’t spell to save my life, and I’m not very good at it…at all…I do really like Scrabble. Making words on a board that link with other words? Yes please! It’s like a writer’s game…and you learn words as you do too, mostly because you have to constantly look things up to see if they’re words.

Qwirkle

Qwirkle is a game that I’ve actually only recently discovered. The last time I was down visiting friends in my home town, my friends pulled this game out…and it was awesome! It was kind of like Scrabble, in that you pick out tiles and place them in some sort of order, except that it’s pretty colourful shapes! And I love that! It’s a great, reasonably quick game that’s not difficult.

Monopoly + Monopoly Deal

Ah. A classic. But it’s a classic for a reason. It’s just so good. It’s the perfect game for those us who actually would quick like to own properties and houses in real life but aren’t quite there yet. Another reason I like it is that I’m good at it. Perhaps I should go into Real Estate,. Hmm… perhaps not. Monopoly Deal is also a great game, and it’s small enough to just take places with you. Not that it’s in my bag all the time, I just mean if you’re going away for the weekend or something…it’s nice and small and easy to play. And it’s reasonably quick, unless you change the rules slightly and play until you get 7 complete properties instead of 3.

Are you a board game person? Or cards? What’s your favourite game?
