I always find it hard to write a book review when I haven’t really enjoyed it. Sometimes I can write a lot about it and why I didn’t like it, and sometimes it’s just hard to get comprehensible words out. This Awakening is one of those. Bear with me.

When you grab freebies from Amazon for your Kindle, it’s a huge hit or miss. When I ‘purchase’ free books, I still need to be interested in the synopsis; I’m not going to ‘buy’ it just because it’s free. I thought Awakening, by Karice Bolton sounded interesting, and like a nice short fantasy/supernatural sort of read. And it was, but it just wasn’t that great.

What is Awakening by Karice Bolton about?

Awakening follows the odd story of Ana, who has horrible nightmares, lives with her bulldog, Matilda and works in the Grizzly Bear Lodge as a waitress. One night, she spots a couple at one of the tables who have incredibly bright green eyes.

Later on, a third member joins their table, and Ana is drawn to him and them. She makes friends with them and starts to date Athen. Only a few days into the relationship, she starts to discover things about the trio that she can’t really understand. She learns that she has actually known these three green-eyed mysteries for years, only she can’t remember. She, just like them, is actually a white demon and there are black demons out to get her. Basically, that’s the gist. Sort of.

My thoughts

Kinda sounds like it might be a good story right? White demons vs black demons, and good looking green-eyed people? Sure thing. But the sad thing is that it wasn’t.

There were lots of things that I didn’t really like about this book. For example, Ana falls for Athen way too quickly (like…in less than a week), there isn’t much of a storyline (they meet, they hang out, they explain what they are, she accepts it, they go on holiday, they are sort of attack by black demons and then they all go home happily ever after), Ana accepts this crazy notion of demons way too easily, the dog is some sort of homing device (you read correctly), and it’s quite a decent length book (305 pages) for a story where nothing really happens. I didn’t like any of the characters, and wouldn’t have given a toss if they all fell off a cliff at the end and died (harsh, but true), and Athen’s little pet names for Ana made me want to vomit. 🤢

Remember this is just my opinion. If you want a book that is fluffy, with a bit of supernatural, a bit of romance, and a very small section of action, and you don’t want to pay for it, then give this one ago. Who knows, you might actually like it. But it was not for me. There are two more books, but I won’t be reading them.
