Book Haul #48

The great book haul of 2017 didn’t go as planned.

Every year here in Auckland the ASB Stadium holds a 24 hours book fair. It begins at 10am on Saturday and goes until 2am Sunday. Then it reopens at 6am Sunday, and finishes at 2pm. 24 hours of nothing but fabulous books.

For the past 3 years I have gone to the book fair, twice on the Saturday. I found the best way to go about it is to get down there reasonably soon after it opens (perhaps 11am), and battle the crowds for an hour or so to grab the best books. Then head back at around 11pm that evening because buying books at midnight is such fun. By the end of Saturday most of the good books have disappeared, and the majority of books that haven’t been put on the tables are done in the evening, so you really get to see them all.

In 2014 I bought 43 books, in 2015 I bought 37, and last year I bought 20. This year my Saturday didn’t exist (thanks to international flights and time travel), so I missed the entire first day. When I touched down in Auckland on the Sunday morning, I headed straight for the book fair. No mere jet lag can keep me back from the books.

As it turns out, apparently the first day really is the best day because, ladies and gentlemen, this year the number of books I bought on the best weekend ever was a grand total of … 6.

I feel like I have let down myself, my fellow book lovers, and probably the Queen.

However, a haul of 6 is still a haul, and so without further ado, here are the measly 6 books I picked up at this year’s ASB’s 24 hour book fair.

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, by E.L. Lockhart

I had seen this book on Good Reads, and have read another by Lockhart, so I thought I’d pick this one up. When the description includes “Frankie Landau-Banks, at age 16: Possibly a criminal mastermind” it definitely grabs your attention.

Crossed, by Aly Condie

I’ve already read this one, but snatched it up when I realised that I only own the 1st and 3rd in this series. Crossed finally means I have all three books. Check it out on Good Reads.

The Next Together, by Lauren James

Hadn’t heard of this one, but the whole different time-line aspects intrigued me. Will let you know what it’s like! Read more about it on Good Reads.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, by Rachel Joyce

I’ve seen these books around the place for years now, but have never picked them up. While walking around the book fair I found the second (The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy), but couldn’t find the first. It was right at the end of my time at the fair that I found The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, so I was rather pleased about that.

Born at Midnight and Awake at Dawn by C.C. Hunter

I’ve had Born at Midnight on my Kindle for a long while now, but never read it. I have a friend who really enjoyed these books, so I thought I might actually pick it up if I had a physical copy of it. Find them on Good Reads.

So while I’m disappointed in my book-hauling efforts at this year’s ASB 24 Hour Book Fair, I now have 6 (or 7?) books to add to my ever-growing collection.
