Molly Mason is not a team player. She does more work than the rest of her team, but when a promotion becomes available, they bring in an outside hire over her. To add insult to injury, she's tasked with training him. This is easier said than done, though, when he has the digital literacy of a toddler and is, infuriatingly, the hottest man she's ever laid eyes on.

Elijah Thorne's reintegration into human society is going swimmingly. He scammed his way into a job, got new clothes, and successfully convinced a myriad of New Yorkers that he is human, not a vampire. The one person he can't win over, though, is his intimidating colleague Molly.

When Molly discovers Elijah's secret, he realizes that being human isn't as easy as he thought. She'll help him act the part if he'll help her get promoted, but when they fall into a colleagues-with-benefits arrangement-no feelings involved-can they keep things professional?

What is Fangs with Benefits by Kath Richards about?

Fangs with Benefits by Kath Richards is the vampire office romance you didn’t know you needed.

Molly Mason, who works twice as hard as everyone else on her team and still gets passed over for a promotion in favour of an outside hire. Worse, she’s the one stuck training him. That job gets a lot harder when the new guy can barely use a computer, let alone anything that might be slightly more than ‘switching it on’, and also happens to be the hottest man she’s ever seen.

Elijah Thorne is settling into human life just fine, thanks very much. He’s landed a job under false pretences, got himself a decent wardrobe and convinced most of New York he’s not a vampire. The one person he can’t fool is Molly. They’re spending too much time together, and she knows something is up.

“I thought people only pretend to work on Fridays.”

Once Molly figures out what Elijah actually is, the two strike a deal. She’ll help him pass as human, he’ll help her get that promotion that she was so rudely denied. Somewhere along the way, professional turns into colleagues-with-benefits, no feelings allowed. Whether Molly and Elijah can actually keep it that way is another matter entirely.

My thoughts on Fangs with Benefits

I thoroughly enjoyed Fangs with Benefits.

I feel like we’re getting vampire stories again and my early-2000s reader soul is excited about that, but not only that, but we’re getting more comedy vampires. It’s not just moody, dark, sexy vampires. Or vampires that glitter in the sun (here’s looking at your Edward Cullen).

I read Fangs for Nothing by Stephanie Holmes recently, too, and that was a similar vibe – vampire trying to be a normal human and a woman who ends up in his sphere and finally catching on. But with humour and comedy in there, too.

Molly is feisty, and while she doesn’t love her job, she still wants that promotion. Elijah is hilarious, mostly because of his inner monologue about various 2026 things that he just doesn’t understand, as he’s been out of society for about 100 years.

“I mean, do you often forget your passwords? You don’t have a password manager on your phone?”

“I do,” I lie. I have never met a password manager, must less kept one on retrainer in my phone.

When they get together after deciding that Molly will help Elijah being a human, and he’ll help her get a promotion, they are very cute and sweet together, despite her initially hating him and him thinking the sun shines out of her. I loved their emerging friendship and relationship, and it was really entertaining to read.

“Because to love is to fear, and to keep loving anyway.”

What dropped it a star for me was the ending and how (no spoilers, don’t worry) some of the main issues of the storyline played out. While I think it was a cute ending, it felt a little rushed and random in the last quarter.

Buuuut on the whole, I had a great time with this book!
