Okay, so I paraphrased a little bit, but walking through the Cadbury World Factory Tour definitely reminded me of Willy Wonka.

On a recent trip down to Dunedin, my friend and I decided that it was a good idea, nay a great idea, to book ourselves in for a Cadbury World factory tour. If you’re unaware of the sad situation, then I hate to be the one to break it to you, but Dunedin’s Cadbury World is shutting down this year. *Gasp* I know.

Due to various reasons, the doors are shutting on this chocolatey site, which has been up and running as a chocolate factory since 1930, but with links back to a bakery back in 1868. It’ll be a sad day later this year when it closes up for good.

But let’s not think on that right now! The tour itself is NZD $22, and it takes an hour.

You’re shown through various rooms and passageways in the factory by a guide (shout out to our guide Pedro for being awesome), and you get to see how some of the chocolate is made, and even make your own chocolatey concoction. As you end the tour, you have a plastic bag full of chocolate you’ve been given over the course of the house, and the images of a huge chocolate waterfall still etched in your mind.

We weren’t allowed to take photos on the tour, but they have a little museum which you can wander through and read all about the history of chocolate, of Cadbury, and of the Dunedin factory. The shop at the end of the tour has some great gifts in it, and obviously, a whole lot of sweet goodness.

If you haven’t been, then it really is a fun hour or so, and this will be your last chance before it shuts up store.
