Celebrate your lady friends with these Galentine’s Day ideas!
With Galentine’s Day just around the corner, you may be after some fun things to do with your lady friends. Galentine’s Day is all about celebrating the wonderful women in your life – your friends, your mother, grandmother. It’s a chance to gather together with your girlfriends and family members and enjoy each other’s company and celebrate your friendships. In this post, we’re going to take a look at 10 Galentine’s Day ideas that you can do with your besties.
What is Galentine’s Day?
Brought to us by the wonderful Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation, Galentine’s Day is a day to celebrate all the amazing women in your life and make fantastic memories.
Because, as this great Buzzfeed article says, ‘romantic relationships are fleeting and messy and Valentine’s Day makes a lot of people feel miserable.’ But friends are there for you, friends support you, they’ll tell you things straight up, and you can be a mess in front of them and they won’t leave you.
When is Galentine’s Day this year?
Galentine’s Day is celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day, every single year, the 13th of February. Even if you’ve got a partner and you’re not single, why not celebrate with your girlfriends anyway? Here are some Galentine’s Day ideas to help you plan!

Have a picnic
I love a good picnic. In New Zealand, you sometimes have to pick your day incredibly well because often we have 4 seasons in one day and we might get rained out. However! That’s part of the fun. Get everyone to bring something and spend the afternoon lounging at a park, or by the beach.
Have a movie night or marathon
Either go all cliched Chick-flicks or do something like an Actor marathon. For example, a while back, friends and I did a Tom Hanks marathon and watched 6 of Tom’s movies in a row. Yes, it took up the entire day, but it was worth it and a lot of fun. You could even dress up.
Bonus: Combine your picnic with your movie night and make a cozy picnic in someone’s lounge. Grab a projector and settle into your beanbags and blankets for your movie marathon.
Head to the cinema and have dessert afterwards
If there’s a movie on that you’re all wanting to see, book your tickets! Keep the evening going by heading out for dessert afterwards. Or check out and see if any of your movie theatres are doing a Ladies Night or a Girls Night. Sometimes here in Auckland they run Chicks at the Flicks, and you can get snacks and dessert IN the theatre, and it’s a lot of fun.
Go out for dinner
Doesn’t have to be expensive – I know I’m a bit of a cheapskate and don’t want to pay heaps for dinner – but even finding a cafe or a local restaurant to support the people in your community is a fun night out.
Plan an outdoor activity together
Head on a walk, or go to the beach. If there are festivals on, have a look at what they’re getting up to. We have several Sculpture trails happening in Auckland at the moment, so something like that is a good day out. Then there are things like paintball for those of you who enjoy shooting paint at your friends, or a colour run or mazes to wander through. Try something more extreme like skydiving. Head to the local rose garden, or go somewhere in your city you’ve never been to before. There’s bound to be something in your city you can go and visit.
Check out a local market
Whether it be a fruit and vege market or a crafty one, markets are great place to spend the morning or afternoon wandering through. Grab a coffee or some lunch at ‘intermission’ and have a fun day enjoying their company (and buying some fruit, because yum).
Do something crafty
Stay at home and spend the afternoon crafting together, if you’re into that. Or head to a place where you can paint your own plates (we painted tiles for our kitchen one day and it was awesome). Do something that you can be creative through and play the tunes you can all sing along to. I have a group of friends (granted one is male) who get together and do crafty things every few months. Why not make it a Galentine’s Day special?
Just do it. You know you want to. Pump the music loud (be aware of noise restrictions, though please! Don’t want your Galentines to be a tale of ending up behind bars overnight), and get your moves on.
Make a weekend of it. Jump in the car and either drive until you find something interesting, see where the road takes you. Or plan a route, book a motel, explore a new town.
Board games night
I love board games. Like, a lot. One of the things that my friends and I often do is have games nights. And they are so much fun. Add snacks and wine, and you’ve got yourselves a glorious evening of mayhem and sore losers.
But you can’t make any of these Galentine’s Day ideas work with your gal-pals (life is busy, I know), flick those closest to you a message and thank them for being such a great friend, encourage them in their day, and let them know that you love having them in your life. Little things like that make all the difference.
Happy Galentine’s Day! How are you celebrating with your friends this year? Will you use any of these Galentine’s Day ideas?
