Woman on a phone, video call, with a guitar. 10 ways to celebrate galentines day during a pandemic

Want to celebrate Galentines Day but can’t leave the house?

Galentines Day, but celebrate in a pandemic. Because when the world throws you a curveball, hit it back with style.

The wonderful day before Valentines Day where ladies celebrate their friendship and probably eat waffles. Thanks to Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation, we’re blessed with this wonderful holiday which has turned from a fictional event on a TV show to a holiday that has been picked up women all over the world.

After all, if there’s another chance to celebrate our spectacular girlfriends, why would we not jump on that bandwagon?

But Galentines Day, like all holidays and celebrations, looks very different in the middle of a pandemic. We’re not able to meet together as much or at all, places are closed and all those events that we would have gone on have been postponed or cancelled.

While we can’t go and do all those Galentines Day activities as we have in past years, that doesn’t mean we can’t still celebrate. It’ll just look a little bit differently.

10 ideas to celebrate Galentines Day in a pandemic

1 | Go out

If you’re in a country where you have things under control and you’re allowed to go out, go out. Follow all your country’s rules around signing in and contact tracing, but make the most of it. Even if it’s just a few of your girlfriends, taking the time when you can is so important. Have brunch, or dinner, or grab a drink. We so undervalue the privilege of being able to go out and enjoy the city, so if you can, go.

2 | Online dinner date

Can’t go out? No worries!

Gather your friends together on Zoom or any other video conference programme, and have dinner together. Get your friends to make something yummy in their own homes and bring it to the Zoom chat. Yes, it’s different than it would be otherwise, but you can still chat and laugh and have a great time.

3 | Online games

Speaking of Zoom, have you played any online games with your friends before? Why not download some Jackbox Games or try online pictionary-esque games such as Drawosaurus. Or do an online puzzle together. They are a lot of fun and if you have a glass of wine too, all the better. You can save the images people draw and laugh about it all over again when you can meet in person.

4 | Board game night

Okay, so bear with for a moment. If you have friends you want to celebrate Galentines Day with and you all have the same board game in your house (likely if you’re all board game fans) then you can make it work. Read my post all about how we played Settlers of Catan in Lockdown to get some inspiration!

5 | Do a craft activity together

Again, set up Zoom or other video communication programmes, and do some crafting together! You’ll find ‘being in each other’s company’, even online, is much more enjoyable than doing your crafts alone.

6 | Learn something new together

Similar to crafting, why not find a SkillShare video to watch together and follow along with? You could do a painting class such as  Watercolor in the Woods or trying your hand (PUN) at lettering: Hand Lettering Essentials for Beginners. There are so many amazing classes out there that you can take for free.

7 | Have a watch party

Thanks to sites like Netflix and Disney Plus, watching a movie ‘together’ has never been easier! Being able to chat with your friends while watching movies in the comfort of your own home – pure joy!

8 | Charades

Again, open Zoom and have everyone have The Game Gal’s Word Generator open to get charade words to play. Then play as per usual. The only difference will be that you’ll have to confirm with your voice (usually not allowed) if people got something correct. You could have a lot of fun with this one!

9 | Bookclub!

If you’re anything like me and my friends, you love a good book. Get together on Zoom on Galentines Day and chat about your recent reads. Spend time recommending books to your friends and scoring some recommendations yourself.

10 | Virtual Tours

Whether it’s sharing your screen to virtually tour one of the amazing museums around the world or check out one of the virtual zoo encounters. Virtually touring your city is another great way to spend time together online. If you’re in different cities, why not share your favourite spots around your city as you share your screen with your besties?

How will you spend Galentines Day during the pandemic?
