I discovered the secret to generating over 100 blog post ideas in less than 30 minutes

If you’re a bit like me and you struggle to think of blog post ideas, you have days of little to no motivation, and sometimes you arrive at your laptop, poise your fingers over the keys and … nothing. Nothing comes out! You’ve finally dried up your creative juices and there’s nothing left.

I have been there! And it’s totally normal! Even seasoned bloggers run out of ideas.

When I first started blogging in 2009 I had no clear structure of my blog, but boy did I have a lot of ideas. But I’ll tell you something: they were terrible ideas.

Now you may be thinking “but, Anjali, there’s no such thing as a terrible idea!” and for the most part I would agree with you. ‘Terrible ideas’ often need a little work but there might be something in that initial thought that you can grab and run with.

Not 18-year-old me though!

I spent months, nay years, writing about who-knows-what and to whom I don’t know. I shared my day-to-day life which was not that interesting (did anyone care that I got a muffin with my hot chocolate at the cafe I went to before seeing Iron Man? Probably not), and I didn’t have a clear purpose in mind.

I’m pleased to announce that I’ve learnt a lot from then, and now over a decade later I have a purpose. I have found my groove and my people (hello, people!) and I absolutely love what I do.

But there are still days when I feel like I’m running low on ideas. Where I jot a few things down and then realise I’ve already written about that before (over 2,000 blog posts later and that starts to happen!).

Here’s the thing I’ve learnt though: there are always more ideas out there.

You just have to go on a little bear hunt to find them.

Enter: blog post idea generators.

Here’s how I generated over 100 blog post ideas in under 30 minutes

When you’re stuck for blog post ideas, one of my new favourite things to do is head to some blog post idea generators. These are websites which enable you to pop in a keyword or two and they’ll churn out a bunch of headlines that you turn into a post.

Here’s a quick example of what it looks like on Impact Blog About Blog Idea Generator (which has become a favourite of mine recently!):

This is the Impact Blog About blog Idea Generator. Bit of a mouthful but it’s super handy! You can either shuffle the word after ‘blog about’ to generate some initial ideas and leave it at that, or you can take it a step further and take that main theme (or enter your own) and refresh the headline generator below to give you a fresh new idea every single click! When you like something, click the heart icon and it will save to a notepad below. Do this for 5 or so minutes and you’ll be amazed how many blog post ideas you can generate!

There are heaps of great blog post idea generators out there, and they’re amazing for finding blog post ideas, even if you have to do a little tweaking to their suggestions here and there. Here are 12 blog post idea generators that I’ve used in the past month that I highly recommend checking out. (And stick around because I’ve thrown a bonus one in there too!)

Impact Blog About Blog Idea Generator

As I mentioned before, this has quickly become my favourite tool for generating blog post ideas. Even if you swap out the numbers they suggest or the themes, it really unlocks the floodgates for some epic ideas!

HubSpot Blog Post Idea Generator

With the HubSpot Blog Post Ideas Generator, you can get a week’s worth of content ideas for free. If you want more than that, you will have to sign up for HubSpot, but those 7 ideas are going to help you out a lot!

Portent Idea Generator

Enter a keyword and let the Portent Idea Generator do the rest! I put in ‘Pinterest’ as an example to see what it would give me, and here are three ideas that I loved: ’13 BS Facts About Pinterest Everyone Thinks Are True’, ‘The Best Ways to Utilise Pinterest‘, and ‘How to Cheat at Pinterest and Get Away with It’

Google Trends

Use Google Trends to figure out what’s trending in your country and around the world. There are a bunch of ways you can use Google Trends to turn into blog post ideas. If you enter a keyword, it will also give you a list of related queries that you can turn into blog posts, or at least will spark some ideas for you.

Google Keywords

So this may seem like an odd one but you know when you’re in Google and you’re doing a search for something and the search engine gives you some suggestions? Sometimes they’re terrible, sometimes they’re horrifying, sometimes they’re downright confusing, but sometimes they’re gold! Here’s an example that I might run with after doing a search for ‘Email marketing’.

BuzzSumo

BuzzSumo is a website that shows you articles around the world that are trending right now. You can then curate the feed you’re seeing using the filters on the left and narrow down the trends. If you want hot-right-now topics, this is a great place to start!

UberSuggest

This is a super cool tool by Neil Patel. Enter your keyword and you’ll see info such as Search Volume, Content Ideas and more. The best part is the keyword suggestions if you scroll down a little bit. Again, really easy to see more keywords that will give you lots more ideas.

FXTools Blog Post Idea Generator

The FXTools Blog Post Idea Generator promises to ‘Kill That Creative Block’. Whether it does or not requires a little work on your part, but it’s another blog post idea generator that is definitely worth checking out. I put in the word Sandwich to see what it would give me. It gave me: ’22 Of The Most Inspiring Sandwich Twitter Accounts’, ’34 Of The Leading Sandwich Bloggers’, and ‘When You Should Avoid Sandwich’. Needless to say I would read all those blog posts.

Answer the Public

Answer the Public is one of the coolest tools ever! Especially if you’re a visual person. Put in your keyword and see a mind map of suggestions/what people are asking questions about. Here’s what happened when I put in ‘social media’

As you can see, it’s taken my keyword/s and produced a mind map of all the things that people are searching for that use those keywords. And this is just the ‘questions’ section. If you scroll down further, you’ll see search results for Prepositions (social media is bad for you), Comparisons (social media vs social network), and a whole list of topics in Alphabetical order. You can save each mindmap as an image to refer back to, or download the entire lot as a spreadsheet.

Build Your Own Blog blog post generator

This blog post idea generator doesn’t allow you to put in a keyword, but you might find some workable headlines by clicking through their refresh icon and seeing what it spits out.

InBound Now: Blog Title Idea Generator

Again, not one that you can enter a keyword for but there is a long list of ideas which you can insert your keywords or topic into.

Content Row: Headline Generator

The Content Row Headline Generator gives you just 3 searches, 3 results per search for free per day, but in those 3/3 you might find some gold!

BONUS: FatJOE Blog Post Title Headline Generator

FatJOE has a great content idea generator, focusing mostly on Headlines. It’s easy to use, too; simply pop your main idea into the box and it’ll spit out a bunch of headline ideas that you can either roll with straight off the bat or that you can adapt to better suit your needs. It will generate 10 ideas for you, but you can grab 100 more if you pop in your email address.

Pick a couple of these that you like, set yourself a timer for 30 minutes (or less!) and generate those blog post ideas! You’ll be surprised at how many ideas you and the generator can come up with together! I got 103 in about 25-minutes!

Which is your favourite? Have another to suggest? Let me know in the comments!
