I’m super excited to have Ria from Thoroughly Modern Millennial here on the blog today, talking about some of her favourite podcasts.
3 Podcasts That Will Open Your Eyes To The World
Hi everyone! My name’s Ria and I’m a podcast addict. (No joke, I think I’m subscribed to about 30.) Podcasts are very much in vogue at the moment and whilst some podcasts are great to just consume for entertainment or news value there are so many that can also open your eyes to other’s lives, stories and culture all around the World.
Here are some of my favourites!
Rough Translation (NPR) | Listen here
NPR in general are fantastic for podcasts, but their newest show Rough Translations is my new favourite to listen to. The simple premise behind the podcast is ‘How are the things we’re talking about being talked about somewhere else in the world?’, with each episode honing in on something topical in the Western world before then exploring it in a different country.
The result are true stories that feel familiar and yet are laced with the subtle intricacies of that country’s culture, language, and of course individual people. Episodes so far have covered a wide range of topics including the perception of race in Brazil, ‘fake news’ in Ukraine, and surrogacy and motherhood in China.
Popaganda & Backtalk (BitchMedia) | Listen here
This is a bit of a two for the price of one from one of my favourite feminist publications, Bitch Media. When you subscribe you get Popaganda, a show focused on a specific topic, and Backtalk, where hosts Amy and Dahlia talk about the latest news, pop culture moments from the past two weeks from a feminist lense. I would recommend delving back into the archives of Popganda as many of the topics they cover (such as healthcare, representation, politics etc.) are often evergreen and always feature a wide variety of interesectional voices.
Nerdette (WBEZ) | Listen here
As the name suggests Nerdette is a pretty nerdy podcast through which hosts Tricia and Greta interview your “favourite authors, artists, astronauts and more!”. They’ve chatted to a whole manner of people from all sorts of industries, disciplines and jobs, from an asteroid hunter, Disney animators, US Senators, to celebrities like Tom Hanks, Felicia Day and Roxanne Gay. Not only are the podcast hosts fantastically nerdy but the range and breadth of topics of their interviews is amazing. It’s so cool to hear from people from all walks of life!
Those are my suggestions but let me know if you have anymore! I’m always happy to add to my ever-growing subscription list!
How great are podcasts? While I don’t listen to on a regular basis, I do tend to binge-listen. These are definitely 3 podcasts I need to tune into sometime. Thank you, Ria, for your post! You can find Ria at the following places:
