How do you go about expressing your creativity?
There are so many different ways of expressing creativity, especially in a world that is constantly changing around us. Some people paint, some play music, some sing, some blog. Today I thought it might be kind of fun to take a look at how I express my creativity – the things I do nearly every day that allow me to get creative, even in the little things. This is in no way a complete list – I have far too many hobbies – but it’s a start, and hopefully, it will get you thinking about how you’re currently expressing your creativity, or give you new ideas for something to pick up.
Blogging
This is the, perhaps, obvious one. No matter what kind of blog you have – beauty, lifestyle, reviews, photography, food etc – it’s all creative, and I love that about the blogging world. Blogging is one of the ways I create every day. Barely a day goes by where I don’t either blog, plan a post, write ideas, write paragraphs that eventually become posts, or take photos that will one day be shared. I think blogging is probably, at the moment (though it didn’t always used to be), my main creative outlet. I think, though, it’s because I basically share everything here on the blog, all the times I create or take photos of etc., are shared here. It’s a great combination of all the things I love.
DIY and sewing
I love making things, whether it be something simple like birthday cards or something that takes longer like sewing bunting, or even my own clothes. I like seeing things online, or on Pinterest, or even in stores, and thinking to myself ‘you know what, no, I’m not going to pay X amount of dollars for this. I can totally make that’. It’s a fun challenge to try and replicate the things you see in the world, but make it a little more special.
While I don’t do it that often, I also love creating scrapbook-type projects. It’s easier, I find, if I have a reason for doing it, like a 30-day challenge, type thing, which is why I’m excited about the 30 Days of Lists that I’m going to be participating in March. I have my pretty paper and washi tape ready, and I’m going to be making a book with all the days in March. Should be good!
Painting
I used to paint a lot more than I do now. I took art in high school, and while I failed Art in my last year (don’t even get me started!), I loved having a reason to paint. I think the reason I’ve painted less these past few years is that I don’t really have a reason to. There’s no assignment to hand in, or end-of-year assessments. No one has asked me to paint anything. However! I frequently whip out the watercolours and have really been getting into that lately. I also paint banners and large back-drop for events too, which I love. I love the feeling of having the paintbrush in hand and creating something new.
Doodling
If I’m not pinning things on Pinterest while I’m watching a movie or a TV show, then I’ll be doodling. Doodling is fantastic, and I find that I have more and more things that just appear each time I pick up my pens to doodle.
Write
As well as writing something every day for the blog, I love writing in general. National Novel Writing Month is fantastic, and I love it when November rolls around every year. I do find, however, that because I’m so often writing things for my blog, book reviews for Blogger’s Bookshelf, I never seem to get around to actually taking another look at my NaNoWriMo story, and actually finishing it.
Photography
My first camera was when I was about 10 years old. It was a little film camera, and I mostly took pictures of my friends or my toys (it’s true). I’m sure I have those pictures somewhere, and I think you might be surprised at how many pictures there were of my dolls. But that was the beginning, and from there I got a Fujifilm point-and-shoot, which I still have, and then I finally upgraded to a Canon DSLR. I love taking photos. A lot. And still of pretty much anything. People, scenery, birds and other animals, that stone on the pavement…anything. You can see a bit of my photography over on my Instagram .
Music
As well as just listening to music, I play piano/keyboard, guitar and ukulele, and I find that if I don’t play at least one of these instruments every day, I go slightly mad. True story. Unlike some of my other creative outlets, music is probably the one thing I need every day. I can go for ages with painting, or sticking, and I could go a few days without writing probably (maybe not taking a photo), but music? Nope. Can’t do it. It’s an everyday thing. Even if it just ends up belting out a song in the shower, or jamming in my room. Must be done.
So those are some of the ways I express my creativity. There are probably more, but to be honest, that’s probably too many. What about you? How do you get creative? Perhaps you’re a blogger? A photographer? A musician? A knitter? Do share!
