Something a little different on the blog today – a guest post! I have some lovely blogging friends covering the blog for a few days over the course of my time away in Chile. Today I’d like to introduce you to Sophie, a fellow New Zealand blogger who writes over at Sofilly Letters. She’s talking about something I am way too familiar with: obsessions. Specifically, fandom obsessions.

Even if you’ve been around This Splendid Shambles a short while, then you’ll know that I have multiple fandom obsessions (Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Supernatural, the Lord of the Rings … if I keep going we’ll be here forever). Thankfully, it’s not just me. Check out some of Sophie’s favourite fandoms!

Fave Fandoms of My Life

I organize my life into sections based on what series I was obsessed with at that time.

I recently returned to Tumblr for a bit after a few years away and I reunited with some of my old loves and also this quote. It really summed up a lot for me. For example, I remember when I was obsessed with Pretty Little Liars in year 12 and forced all my friends to start watching it and then a year or two after I lost interest while my friends continued to be obsessed. I personally define an ‘obsession’ on a topic as something that I want to search up all the things related to it and will know more than basic knowledge about. I must also have cried at least once at it, slapped someone in an ‘I knew that was going to happen’ sort of way at least once and had my heart mutilated by ‘feels’ at least once.

Obsessions come and go but these are a couple that I’m currently loving and would happily reblog all the gifs and quote on Tumblr. In chronological order of course.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is my one true love, I commonly get into angsty conversations with friends who don’t know all the little details (recently yelling in caps to someone that SEAMUS FINNIGAN IS A RELEVANT CHARACTER THIS IS WHY…).

Don’t worry, I understand most people don’t know details or like it as much as me but sometimes I need to stand my ground. The thing is, while I’ve always loved Harry Potter it wasn’t until around year 11 when I found friends as obsessed as me, and found A Very Potter Musical, did I become as obsessed as I am now. I’m at the point now that I regularly get tagged on Facebook by my Mum in anything and everything Harry Potter-related.

I know there’s probably a few people in the world who know more details than me, but I know more than most in my immediate family/friends group so that’s a win for me.

Disney

Similar to Harry Potter, while I enjoyed Disney as I was growing up I wasn’t truly a ‘fangirl’ until some point in my late teens. However, unlike Harry Potter, I don’t really remember the point it changed. I have a feeling it was around the same point I found my love of design and animation and all that jazz. Also, Disney soundtracks were one of the few playlists that got me through those late nights in my first year of University so that contributed to it. Since then Disney music never fails to get me up dancing and feeling happier.

Game of Thrones

It seems everyone and their dog is loving Game of Thrones at the moment (apart from the select few who tell you on a daily basis that they don’t watch it and don’t want to hear about it) so it’s not a surprise I love it too. I started watching it the summer after my first year of University after I’d heard a few people talking about it. I didn’t really think it was going to be for me, I’m not a big fan of actiony/fighting/sword swinging type shows, but I gave it a chance because dragons.

What can I say, I watched half a series that day and never looked back.

The thing I enjoy about it is the fact there are so many little storylines going on, and you don’t actually have to follow everyone to understand what’s going on. If you don’t care what Balon Greyjoy is up to then you don’t really have to concentrate much. But in general all these tiny storylines build up to this big ongoing storyline and when things start to overlap and unwind, let’s say I’ve whacked my boyfriend a number of times yelling ‘I told you so’ and squealing at the screen.

Court of Thorns and Roses

My most recent love. I wrote a whole post recently about how I discovered this and my thoughts. But because it’s a new obsession, one that I wasn’t on Tumblr when I discovered it, it’s been totally different than my other obsessions. It just hasn’t been as intense, I want to say, I haven’t really fangirled as much. Maybe I just need follow some more tags and reread them again to notice even more of the details. Then I do need a movie or a TV show or something so we can get lots of pretty gifs! Unless they’re going to ruin it, then maybe I’ll manage with what we have. I just want a real person to ogle as Rhysand to be quite honest.

I have now used a lot of words that I never thought I’d say again after leaving Tumblr back in 2014 so I shall leave you with this:

Oh my word. Everything about this post. Harry Potter: Yes. Disney: Yes. Game of Thrones: Yes. A Court of Thorns and Roses (by Sarah J Maas): Not quite, but it’s on my list of books to read and I hope to read at least book 1 before the year is out. I love her other books, so I’m sure I will be on this bandwagon.

I have a Tumblr account too, and, like Sophie, had a break from it for a while. Occasionally I remember I should be posting things on there, but I mostly go it these days to laugh at the Supernatural fandom taking over every single post. Worth it.
